It’s entirely possible it’s not happening, and this phenomenon of “model degradation” is just user hype meeting reality.

Any chance you’re just learning more about what the model is and is not useful for?

>Because AGI is still some years away For years now, proponents have insisted that AI would improve at an exponential rate. I think we can now say for sure that this was incorrect.

Advertising doesn’t mean free money. Aggressive advertising will almost certainly drive away users.

I certainly don’t think Simon is a shill. He’s obviously a highly talented person, who in my opinion just doesn’t exercise appropriate discernment in some cases. Edit: Of course, this isn’t a trait unique to Simon either. Everybody has blin

Take a look at this thread regarding the original claim: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46624541 The top comment is indeed baseless hype without a hint of skepticism.

This is why AI skeptics exist. We’re now at the point where you can make entirely unsubstantiated claims about AI capability, and even many folks on HN will accept it with a complete lack of discernment. The hype is out of control.

But there aren’t very many domains where this type of verification is even possible.

You could find a pre-print on Arxiv to validate practically any belief. Why should we care about this particular piece of research? Is this established science, or are you cherry-picking low-quality papers?

Well, hallucinations have been identified as an issue since the inception of LLMs, so this doesn’t appear true.

This doesn’t make sense. They are fundamentally different things, so an observation made about Alphazero does not help you learn anything about LLMs.

How is this Simon’s area of expertise? I know he’s a programming legend, but I’ve never heard anything to indicate he’s a machine learning expert. I’m not intending to be dismissive, just noticing a pattern and advocating a bit of skepticis

No, “just search” is correct. Boosters desperately want it to be something more, but it really is just a tool.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this guy say anything negative about an AI product, which makes me skeptical of his insights here.

Just because it’s “new” doesn’t mean it’s going to fulfill all our wildest fantasies. It’s becoming clear that these things are just… tools. Useful in certain situations, but ultimately not the game-changer they’re sold as.

Guessing this isn’t going to be popular here, but he’s right. AI has some use cases, but isn’t the world-changing paradigm shift it’s marketed as. It’s becoming clear the tech is ultimately just a tool, not a precursor to AGI.

Read about linguistic history and make up your own mind, I guess. Or don’t, I don’t care. You’re dismissing a series of highly robust scientific results because they fail to validate your beliefs, which is highly irrational. I'm no lon

There’s linguistic evidence that, while language influences thought, it does not determine thought - see the failure of the strong Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. This is one of the most widely studied and robust linguistic results - we actually kn

Uh, I must have missed the “consensus” here, especially when many studies are showing a productivity decrease from AI use. I think you’ve just conjured the idea of this “scientific consensus” out of thin air to deflect criticism.

But that’s not true, and the linked agentic design is not a counterargument to the poster above. The LLM is a small part of the agentic system.

LLMs work by “walking” “hyperspace” ? Don’t try to correct people if you don’t know what you’re talking about. LLMs are quite literally non-deterministic language models, and that’s all they are.

I wonder how much of this stuff is attributable to true model advancement, or if it’s an improvement in the genetic harness? It’s impossible to separate strict model improvement from improvement in the associated tools.
