Also, see our follow-on project, Browsix ( http://browsix.org ), which makes it possible to run Unix applications inside the browser.

File a bug report, please. Doppio is actively maintained, though our current focus is on Browsix (which incorporates and extends some of Doppio's functionality -- see browsix.org).

Journals are not the primary or most important venue for publication for most areas of computer science. If anything, the current trend is to have journals include proceedings from the top conferences. The FAQ discusses the various pitfalls

We (the PLASMA research group at UMass, http://plasma.cs.umass.edu ) developed a system called AutoMan specifically designed to automatically manage quality (as well as to automatically compute pay and time) for a wide variety of

Doppio ( https://github.com/plasma-umass/doppio ) is exactly this: a POSIX layer (for a single process), while Browsix is a Unix layer. Both are JS only. Doppio implements a ton of libc functionality, enough to host a fu

Correct. To quote Bobby's comment above: Browsix is not an interpreter. Browsix provides a shared kernel and primitives like system calls to _existing_ interpreters and runtimes that target JavaScript. For example, we extended both the

You should never do this. Best-case favors outliers and does not represent expected performance, which is what we care about. Just because the stars happen to align one time doesn't mean you report that run. Consider the following ru

Hans Boehm's GC is actually really, really good. Before you embark on a massive engineering effort that will likely lead to little gain and a lot of pain, I would measure the overheads very carefully. I am not at all convinced precise

It's nice to see this work taking Doppio into new places. For an overview of Doppio, BrowserFS and the DoppioJVM, here's a video presentation mostly based on a talk given by John Vilk at PLDI 2014. Unfortunately, there's no a

Well deserved and absolutely couldn't happen to a nicer guy. After giving a talk at PLDI when I was a grad student, Simon made a point of walking up to me and saying "Nice talk." That had me walking on air for quite a while

The view is wrong. In computer science -- at least at top programs -- students begin research immediately.

In Computer Science, PhD students at any reasonable institution are invariably funded (stipend + tuition & some fees). Most who are in non-theoretical fields get research assistantships, which pay for them to do their PhD without any te

FWIW, these (IMHO absurdly) short PhD programs basically mean you need to do a postdoc for your CV to even be competitive with US CS PhDs -- assuming you want to do research in a top institution or research lab. So it's far from an obv
