Facebook still uses PHP heavily. Technically it's a language called "Hack" (PHP augmented with some nice modern features), and runs either on HHVM (JIT: PHP/Hack -> C -> binary) or precompiled to binary.

At ClearCoin, we use a stored private key in the user's browser extension to sign every authenticated request. The signature is verified on the server, checking that it matches the Ethereum wallet address listed in the payload.
