If you've read the Steve Jobs biography (or biopic), you might recall Guy Kawasaki's accidentally-prescient spoof Apple press release[1] from 1994 about a (at the time) hypothetical Apple-NeXT acquisition. Choice quote: > As

As someone from Waterloo, I just feel a bit insulted :P In terms kind of analogous to the Bay Area, Toronto is like SF, and Kitchener-Waterloo is like Palo Alto. Hamilton feels more like parts of the East Bay.

Oh, huh. Interesting. In the first season of Silicon Valley, there's a part where (spoilers) a main character gets "unassigned" from a Google parody, and it's mentioned that it's inspired by some Japanese management

I'm not sure that this experiment is meaningful. The point of a preload-fork process model à la Unicorn is that the `fork` syscall gives you copy-on-write[1] shared memory between the parent and the child, so you save a bunch of time b

Thanks! Standardizing on MySQL because of internal expertise is definitely a great reason.

Please forgive me, but I don't understand your hostility. I understand that there are perfectly legitimate reasons for using a database as a queue. If you frequently need to look at and rearrange your jobs while they're in flight,

I think "niche business" would convey the same meaning as "nice business" here :P At least I'm interpreting "nice business" as in "oh, it's just a nice business, not anything life-changing"

Oh wow, some interesting stuff in here. Looks like they use MySQL as a queue for scheduling the ORC Peons? Would have loved to hear more about why they did that.

A really cool paper to read is The Design of POSTGRES [1] by Stonebraker et al. It's dated by its mentions of things like POSTQUEL, but it's still really interesting to read about the early design of seminal features like the ex

I'm sorry -- it was not intended to be condescending. I really haven't heard much about Node.js for some time, and it's actually really hard to figure that out.

Serious question: Is Node.js still a popular choice for developing webapps? I thought that has stopped being true for a while now.

Sure, but I wouldn't exactly call them mature yet. I think MySQL is still much easier to trust than RocksDB. (I don't actually know much about RocksDB, but I remember that LevelDB had a bunch of data corruption issues. Hopefully

Hey! I really enjoyed the talk you gave at Square :p I agree that we can't build on the same base forever, but I also think it's really hard to get companies to trust completely unproven solutions -- ground-up rearchitectures li

Haha. Yeah, I've read this paper. My argument was mostly based on the actual technical differences, so I didn't really count DBaaS as a separate category. At the very least, I don't think I know enough about how DBaaSes work

Within the spectrum of so-called "NewSQL" databases, there are basically two kinds: * ones built on top of a mature relational database (e.g. Vitess, CitusDB) * ones built on top of some custom or unproven KV store (e.g. TiDB, Coc

Nice. I worked on something like this at an internship. I wrote a Unicorn-like preload-fork multiprocess server in Ruby (for other reasons). I realized that the workload (which involved a large amount of long-lived static data on the heap)

Somewhat tangential, but I'm kind of sad that not much more was done with pg_paxos[1]. Group Replication[2] just made it into MySQL 5.7.17 and is GA; it uses a variant of Paxos to commit transactions. Even though most people will proba
