That's a silly map, given there's no actual authority to define this and the rules are arbitrary. Here's another map of Western countries: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/91

You're gonna have to let the Debian people know about that. They've been calling themselves an Operating System for as long as I can remember. :-)

Well, that's a kernel. I don't see why something needs to be either a distribution or an OS. Ubuntu is an operating system. It is also a distribution of Linux. If I'm using Debian with the Hurd kernel, is the actual OS Hurd?

Regarding your second paragraph: I find the English word "cunt" extremely interesting, because my own native languages (French and Portuguese) simply do not have any words that convey the level of offensiveness that seems to be co

Well in most civilized places, including where I live, ordinary people don't have to deal with dental costs on a one-off basis. You just pay your taxes (or the state pays them if you can't afford it) and you're provided with

I think that's a false equivalency. The cost for people on AZERTY to just get a nice QWERTY layout, individually, is very small, and can be implemented on a personal level. Units of measure have to be, more often than not, coördinated

I for one would make no design decisions at all taking French AZERTY as a consideration. As a Frenchman I feel I can say it's the world's most badly designed keyboard that's used in a major language. I would truly like to kno

Sure, granted, and I'm sure GP agrees. However this major subtlety between licensed and purchased goods could not be clear to the layman, so it's also arguably our responsibility as technical types to elucidate the difference.
