There is a balance to be struck. NPM in particular has been a veritable dependency hell for a long time. I don't know if it just attracts inexperienced developers, or if its security model is fundamentally flawed, but there have been s

Or firejail. Or QubesOS using a dedicated VM. There are options, but it would still be nice if Obsidian had a more robust security model.

This is an erroneous blanket statement. Photographing people in public is illegal in plenty of places, depending on what exactly you're doing. Taking a picture of a big crowd is usually fine. Singling out individuals sometimes isn'

Assuming heating oil is diesel, it's not very flammable and not a huge fire hazard. Soil pollution from leaks and spills seems like a bigger concern there. But I guess some people have large tanks of LPG which might be a bigger danger?

I fear that this sort of focus on individual actions has made a lot of people rather upset (e.g. the plastic straws debacle) for very little gains. And I worry that it might backfire.

I doubt that's made any kind of environmental/ecological impact at all. The cheap, flimsy plastic carrier bags contain orders of magnitude less material than the reusable kind, and had a second life as a bin liner. Now I need to b

I had a (now defunct) startup in this space some years ago. Maybe I can help shed some light on why things are the way they are. 1. Money. Most museums have no money. They either run on donations, on subsidies, or at the whim of wealthy pat

Here are some of the things I do in Obsidian: 1. I have a Daily Note which is my starting point of the day. Aside from some TODOs and some daily reflections, it also contains an image map of things that are currently important. This map get

It does all seem utterly ridiculous. Both in terms of what's included and in terms of what isn't included. Pictographic-language-by-committee is probably the worst way of designing anything. ~4000 emoji, the choices range from inf

Looking at the PISA 2022 results (2022 is the most recent report, PISA is the Programme for International Student Assessment), this is clearly a way bigger problem than just the US. Many Western countries have a downward trend in maths, rea

I don't think signed email would solve phishing in general. But for a service by-and-for programmers, I think it at least stands a chance. Signing the packages seems like low hanging fruit as well, if that isn't already being done

So many legit emails contain links that pass through some kind of URL shortener or tracker (like mailchimp does). People are being actively conditioned to ignore suspicious looking URLs.

This is critical infrastructure, and it gets compromised way too often. There are so many horror stories of NPM (and similar) packages getting filled with malware. You can't rely on people not falling for phishing 100% of the time. Peo
