Governments sometimes work around limitations by using private third parties that aren’t bound to them. e.g. if they had to pay to use httpd, they would just start paying a commercial hosting company that exists solely to provide http servi

The problem with “non commercial” exceptions in FOSS licenses is that there’s no good definition of “non commercial”. Interpretations sometimes includes “anything that involves money / payments” even if that’s just distribution costs,

I agree, but would like for a way to pay for an article, or a single day, week, or month of access. Just like I could buy a single one-off issue of a publication a couple of times before starting a long term relationship with it. Not all pu

Same. I get really obvious phishing emails on the “priority” part of my inbox at least once a month (although usually it’s on a burst of 3-4 on close proximity).

With JetBrains IDEs (e.g. Webstorm) it’s posible to point the IDE to a central installation of ESlint (independent from the project you’re working on). I use that for smaller projects where I don’t want to include a full installation of ESL

That’s not real. It’s a parody, from an Adam Sandler movie, about selling out. Here’s a clip with the part that comes after the ad: https://youtu.be/NZ3o4dgD6qY?si=X1vZdCGtkkuqOmtq

I don’t think it’s rose colored glasses. Google saw the value of forums as a source of information when it bought and indexed Deja News’ usenet archive. A lot of pop and early Internet culture resided there. This was then turned into Google

I worked with manual memory management for a decade (24/7 systems) and don’t miss it. It’s not per-se hard, it’s not scary, but if you’re dealing with structures that may contain reference loops, or using an architecture based on event

Yes. I used Google sheets as a database to build a website and ran into this issue. The worse part is, if you come across the limit there’s not much you can do but wait or rate limit. Another problem I had is an API change one year in. I wo

It's not mentioned in the terms of service either. I would recommend removing this because it's against the GDPR... and even foreign companies have to comply (for the protection of European citizens, wherever they are) if they off

In Argentina a “flato” is a flatulence, and flatito would mean a little fart.

Agree. Also, I live in a “cheap” country… so cheap for food and rent. Expensive for clothes, very expensive for tech, rather expensive to travel, etc. So anyone paying me in relation to the cost of buying food is abusing the asymmetry.

I’m 46 and been working professionally since the late 90s. There was never a time in the history of the web when storing user passwords in plaintext was OK. Encrypted passwords were already well established in UNIX.. although I remember usi

The GDPR does not require a pop up or banner… but it does require explicit consent through opt-in (or no tracking). So this is literally worse than nothing.

Cookie consent popups are not mandated by the GDPR (the EU privacy law), they’re just a stupid (and often infringing) reaction to it. The GDPR disallows tracking without consent, but more in the spirit of “don’t track” than “get consent”. I
