Haha, I suppose this illustrates how well Linux can work for every different preference, but both of those sound like exactly what I don’t want at all. Being called to pay attention to something, immediately, because some other person did s

Switching back to Linux after ten years on Mac, I had completely forgotten how much I love it when my computer does _not_ notify me about anything. I have no notification system installed. It’s been a few months and I haven’t missed anythin

I'm glad to find that it's not just me. I was wondering what I've done wrong to wake up with 80% battery after closing the lid and unplugging it. After two swollen batteries in a MacBook Pro, I've made a habit of not lea

True, bike shops tend to hock one manufacturer. I still think reducing the SEO ‘reviews’ would create space for honest reviews though.

I don’t have a feature list off the top of my head. The basics that Strava offers would be a good start: show your GPS tracks on a map, allow sharing with friends, a chronological feed of your friends’ rides.

If Google deindexed the spam, that effort might actually be worth it for a bike shop to do an honest comparison. But so long as you’re just going to get buried by SEO spam, why bother?

I don't have a side project to recruit for right now, but I've wanted this very thread in the past. My current projects all revolve around reducing my dependency on commercial SaaS products. A hypothetical project I'd be inte

The past hounds you more the more recent of a memory it is. The best way move past it is to start making new memories. Have new experiences and it will eventually become a distant memory that you can observe more objectively rather than emo

We don’t allow things on your property to emit all kinds of things without limitations. Smells, gases, smoke, radiation, etc. Why is visible EM radiation an exception? In fact it isn’t: try displaying pornography on your property.

Sounds like a typical stroll down Market Street. Never a shortage of people trying to get you to sign up and donate money to some cause, and they won’t take “no thanks” for an answer.

I’m sure it’s out there, but I had a similar idea to make an audio device plugin like soundflower to pipe audio through and automatically mute when it detects an ad. We really need an OpenWrt-like project for smart TVs so that you could run

I’m on the fence about whether this is scummy. On the one hand, it is diminishing an institution that families like my own relied on to have halfway-decent things for our home. On the other, thrift stores could sell these things themselves

In my experience, a lot of these paid apps are gold, but discovery is tough. The mainstream, ad supported alternative gets all the eyeballs. Maybe there should be an index of tracking-free software, if there isn’t already.
