Since when has Taiwan had nukes? There was a nuclear program in the 80s and the US pressured them to abandon it. Even civilian nuclear engineering is not very popular in Taiwan. I’d be kind of surprised if Taiwan had any kind of nuclear wea

Characters are not words. Most words are 2- or 4-character combinations. Individually they have fragments of meaning, so you may get a hint, but not enough to understand for sure unless you’ve learned the word.

Also traditional, and I agree it’s easier to remember them than simplified characters even if they are more complicated to write.

I mean to say that my current method mostly omits hand writing. I can use a keyboard or phone to write and I can recognize characters fine. But on top of just learning a language, is Heisig so effective that I will be able to also memorize

As another adult Chinese learner, does something like the Heisig method really help with language acquisition or just memorizing characters? I’m skeptical because of the immense amount of time it takes to learn even without elaborate story

Fun. At a very high level this is similar to what Gaussian splats do. You nudge Gaussians, that start out as random blobs in 3D space, in a direction that minimizes a cost between their projections into known camera poses and input images.

If I had been buying a ticket at a window from a human, there's no way I'd have handed over 50 EUR without someone understanding me. If fluency in the local language to the level that you can have a phone conversation (which is ma

About 10 or 11 years ago I wrote a bot that sat in our company Campfire chat training a Markov chain for each person. Then you could command it to imitate someone and it would spit out hilarious madlibs. This would likely not be amusing any

I had a similar experience in Germany about a year ago. Train stations are mostly self-service now. The ticket kiosk ate my €50 and promptly rebooted. It didn’t print a receipt or anything. The only human I could find was a security guard.

The “|” operator was already used for set unions and binary OR, so it’s a little late to reserve it for control flow. Personally I don’t mind having a “dict union” operator at all.

Sometimes computer vision applications require rectilinear images, but you don’t have a chance to choose the hardware, or it was chosen with other constraints in mind. No reason to dump on someone doing research to rectify an image in a nov
