Just to clarify, Reagan's tax cuts were actually a revenue windfall for the Treasury, as it unlocked a ton of capital gains that investors had been sitting on and resulted in an economic expansion that, aside from a brief recession in 90-91

Good point. I think what he meant to say is that the article made sweeping generalizations about the quality of human decision making, resting on a few superficial stats and questionable assumptions. It also fetishized tricks to change folk

Yes, Time Magazine allows editorial writing throughout its content. I won't comment on what I think their biases are, but I'm pretty sure you can detect them on your own.

You understand incorrectly, for the most part. A sinking tide lowers all boats. Buffett doesn't care what the stock market prices his company at in the short term, only how the intrinsic value of his company improves over decades. Also, the

This doesn't address my criticism in the slightest, and I'm extremely well aware of all of this. My comment did not concern what statistics the press should report in presenting financial data, only the lie of the original headline which su

Sorry, when a headline says "home sales fell 41% in February" I do not assume year over year, I assume month over month. This post's headline is needlessly provocative and misleading. Take it to reddit.

If Newton were to meet Einstein, he'd accept Einstein's adjustments after a few hours (days?). If Hayek were to meet Krugman, they'd be ruthlessly arguing months later.

Nowhere does his post imply that the reason he's leaving is because his design aesthetic clashes with Google's desire for "clean, spartan, and utilitarian." It's perfectly possible to meet those goals and not be ugly, like, e.g., iGoogle an

That's what unit testing is for? True, and do you understand the trade-offs? Unit testing is far more time consuming than assertions. Moreover, you're forced to write artificially short routines, routines of a length that research has shown

I wish you and your parent would stick with Occam's Razor on this one. There really are a large percentage of reasonably minded people who think that legalizing drugs would cause more harm than good. Considering that alcohol has well-known

The comments here are disappointingly one-sided. Nowhere did Brooks suggest that he wanted to return to the good ol' days with all its warts. Incremental evolution of systems is a known good strategy. There's no reason whatever to believe t

Well, you have to realize that up until Ayn Rand, the only popular absolutism was Marxism. People were pretty excited to have an absolutism that promoted striving for excellence rather than striving for grey sameness.
