Github is a great site, but it's not the only place where developers publish code - so be careful. For instance, there are other places like Bitbucket (which I use myself because of Mercurial and the unlimited amount of private repos), Goog

Well, let's see if this one manages to recognize and correctly use all the hardware devices of my Asus laptop. 11.04&11.10 were so bad for it I had to revert to 10.04 which I'm still using.

Incredible, and kudos to everyone involved. I wish I'll live long enough to see the fruits of such efforts harvested.

I agree. I have Dropbox for a couple of years now and the Public Folder was always there, allowing me to drop files in an ask (by right-clicking) for a public link, that "just works". Perhaps DB made this feature available for all files and

The SO database is very liberally licensed and available for download, by the way, so it's surely one of the most open ways to store your data.

ISTM that Instragram appealed to FB simply because Google+ has a very convenient automatic upload of all pictures taken by the phone. You can then easily choose which circle or person(s) to share these pics with, or not share them at all an

I agree. I deliberately stop drinking coffee for a month or two once in a while (just to prove myself that I can), and it never takes more than 2-3 days to completely withdraw from the physical effects.

Are you comparing the amount of attention cats need with the amount children need (particularly infants & toddlers)? You are so going to have a wakeup call one day :)

Each of PHP, Perl and Ruby has their niche(s), but excluding those Python is far more popular. And the comparison with Java/C is irrelevant here since this is a different domain of languages (dynamic) we're talking about here.

Please, please, stop with this TIOBE nonsense. This index is a joke - can't someone with a burning desire for a weekend project create an open-sourced index website and engage with other hackers to incrementally improve it?

Yes, but the Python eco-system didn't remain standing in one place either. Lots more libraries, more stable and feature-full releases, and great support for bindings for well known libraries/frameworks/APIs all across the board, as Python h

I think most of the comments here are taking it too far. Not using classes in some cases is not equivalent to stopping using classes altogether. Classes are yet another tool in the programmer's toolbox. Sometimes the tool makes sense, somet

Seriously, why shouldn't a guy with years of programming career behind him be able to take 6 months off? It's only basic financial wisdom not to live on 99% of your earning and always save so you have something to fall back to.

I think programmers have achieved harder tasks than detecting which protocol the server speaks and speaking its language, starting with the most optimal protocol and falling back to simpler and more common ones.

Why? AFAICS, SPDY is open and available for everyone who wants to implement it. What's so bad about companies making it open, free and open source, thus contributing to a better Internet experience for everyone? No one limited SPDY to Googl

I would say the title of this link (and article) is misleading. Simplistically taken, it can mean that FB aims for $5B valuation, which isn't true.

Alexandrescu is a great programmer, and it's well worth heeding to his advice. While reading "Modern C++" and being honestly horrified by the complexity of C++ and the way you have to fight the compiler and the language to get flexible code

I think the idea is to draw attention of the non-technical crowd. Those who can "put up a greasemonkey script" are probably well aware of SOPA already.
