That's a simplistic way to look at things. As others mentioned, there's of course R&D. But there's also a huge difference between military-grade hardware and your hobby kit. Would you rely on the latter with your life? To work reliable

Well, "once you boot up" is the key phrase here. One of the greatest things about CrOS is how fast it boots up and how fast it comes out of a sleep state. ISTM that SSD is important for these.

That sounds like Apple! This HP laptop indeed doesn't look to be a great find, but I doubt it will be slower than the Samsung ARM one. So it's more expensive, OK. Maybe it's the larger screen, and/or the HP brand, but folks aren't forced to

This mainly makes me lament the fragmentation of the Stack Exchange network. This question, in particular, should have been on Stack Overflow. IMHO this fragmentation hurts the community. Very much.

Good point. I hate it when folks make up names and acronyms without checking first for existing work, at least in related areas .

Boy, I love Jared Diamond's books. An absolute must read for any hacker.

But there's only a limited amount of articles on the first page... I would much rather see something programming/startup/technology-related up there. The threads about Aaron were important. The follow-up threads about his legal case vs. Ort

Please, stop this. This is off topic on HN. A prosecutor's legal battles with some drug-infested motel is not what I come here to read about. Stop turning HN into a tabloid where people read about loved and hated celebrities.

Folks are free to look for full-time gigs. But such short-term projects can provide invaluable experience that can help people get actually accepted to full-time jobs. Arguably, past experience is the most important factor in job hunting. W

The "satisfaction %" heart graphic made me chuckle. The 1.4% growth from 2010 to 2011 doesn't seem like a big change in heart size, but the 0.8% between 2011 and 2012 - that deserves a huge heart. Even when produced by trustworthy sources l

My point is that without government regulation cartels wouldn't arise in the first place. Cartels are vulnerable to competition from outside. No industry has a high enough barrier of entry these days, since many huge corporations shoot all

It may be marginally off topic, but this is exactly why it makes me sad seeing people claiming that monopolies are why capitalism doesn't work. The only reason monopolies really succeed is because of government regulations like this one.

I agree, and would bet that the person in the photo is not an engineer. Engineers in Google have either two 24'' monitors, or a single 30'' monitor :-)

I'm saddened by the recent shift of HN discussions to Reddit-isms. For Reddit, we have Reddit. Please, stop wasting others' time.

Allow me to disagree. While I myself use Ubuntu as my main desktop PC, I can totally see how Android makes more sense for a lot of customers. Don't forget who this is aimed for. Alas, Ubuntu is still mostly for folks above some level of com

Forever is such a strong word... What if Fogcreek goes bust one day? I would actually prefer companies to charge money for such services, it gives greater confidence in them in the long run. Even a measly $10/year per user is a great busine

At first I was about to dismiss this as TIOBE-like crap. But giving it a second thought, there is a deep difference in methodology. TIOBE - language is popular if "<language> tutorial" brings up lots of results on Google This page

Upvoting it even though it's a pretty old piece and has appeared on HN before. A very inspirational piece of work, and a creatively fun way to learn about the ubiquitous ELF format.
