Multiple origins are probably more common than we think. We tend to be biased to want to see singular causes of things, but language is often a murky soup full of feedback cycles. In the example you gave, if it is not an origin, it could at

I know a lot more people whose lives have been deeply enriched by acid, than those who've ended up on the ends of those proverbial meat hooks. That being said, casualties are real and can happen, it's great work that Psymposia is

I second everything parent said ^ You'll get a lot more utility and value out of software these days, but if you really want a hardware synth, the non-trendy 90s romplers can carry you far. If you want something with knobs and analogue

As a parent of a 10 and 7yo your insight here is absolutely golden. I worry a lot about my kids getting sucked into that world. Right now we're keeping them well away from social media, and very little and restricted screen time. Your

It's interesting to see how far language/norms have come since 2009. Still pretty damn funny I thought, if you can get past those two terrible and unfunny slips. I like the idea of not throwing out the whole thing when someone say

Many places have spots for bicycles on the trains, and mass guarded bike parking at train stations. Helps a bit with this last mile problem. Ebikes really extend the range

Bikes are great for the last-10-mile problem, easily. I've got plenty of friends who cycle commute 15km+ each direction, each day, and are quite happy (and healthy) doing it.

During the summer of 2021 Lytton, BC in Canada hit a slightly higher temperature of 49.6C. The next day the town burned down. https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/literally-hotter-than-t...

In the Hindu pantheon, the goddess Saraswati is associated with music, learning, intelligence, knowledge. It seems like the link between musical training and cognition is something humanity has been aware of for some time.

It's nuts. Canada has a lot of good things going for it, but housing affordability is at a crisis point.

Very cool. Which reminds me, what the heck happened to old-school progressive JPEGs? I remember seeing them a lot in the early days of images on the internet, but it seems like you don't see them around anymore. Why is that?

Thanks, I didn't know AVIF was well supported alreadyA I remember I couldn't decide if I liked AVIF or JPEG XL better quality-wise, but the support would make AVIF the clear winner.

Sounds like this particular piece of news is underwhelming, but from my own casual experimentation, JPEG XL delivers much better quality vs compression ratio than Google's WebP (and the lossless compression is really good too). I look
