10 years ago ... MySQL MySQL could barely do joins ten years ago. Today, it's still behind where Oracle was ten years ago. You can throw extremely complicated queries at Oracle and it generally optimizes them well. Don't think of MySQL

You can have multiple projects open in IntelliJ. When you open a second project, it prompts to open it in a "New Window" or "This Window". The confirm dialog has a "remember" option, which you can reset under Prefences -> General -

I haven't used Netbeans, but IntelliJ is fantastic. The editor is fast and responsive, and features such as completion, inspections and refactoring work very well. Most of the professional Java developers I know use IntelliJ.

It doesn't use the Rails migrations -- it reads the schema from schema.rb, which is generated by `rake db:schema`. You usually don't run this directly as it happens whenever you run `rake db:migrate`, but it's not dependent on migrations.

less.js has weird issues with caching. If you use @import, sometimes it won't ever refresh the imported files. It uses the HTML5 offline caching APIs, so even clearing your browser cache doesn't help (at least in Chrome).

RVM also manages gemsets, which lets you quickly save and switch the set of installed gems (packages). You're correct that it doesn't replace gem as a package manager.
