This is a very poignant article. personally, it doesn't bother me as much since I actually know what each platform is capable of. Most people don't bother to research and rely on friends or media telling them what to think. Either way, all

I loved the ad I saw on the page (I am on a mobile device) proclaiming, "Need an eye exam?" from Pearle Vision. Seems oddly fitting.

Actually, this has already happened a few times. There are a number of suicidal people that posted on various networks about their problems and people egged them on. I think I remember the most vivid one being on bodybuilding.com

I guess that depends a bit on your users. If you want a broad appeal, it might be difficult for people to remember. This is merely based on my opinion, but I do think that the "tsch" is very uncommon and that would itself put off a lot of p

It is common practice to separate server and client side code like this. The back end just outputs the result of the query into the javascript.

Would the apps be able to run as background processes? It's a really good move by AMD. One that RIM probably should have at least considered (I couldn't resist bringing them up)

There isn't much that they can sue Google over. Most of the stuff that Samsung got sued over was due to hardware and Touchwiz customization. Samsung main problem is that it can't roll out updates quickly enough. Samsung updates are really p

To be fair, that was kind of an accident. Xmlhttprequest just kind of sat there until somebody else came up with a use for it.

I'm curious: was there anything that damning in the info that was released through wikileaks? I didn't really follow the story there with the diplomatic cables.

I think it doesn't have as much to do with HN as it does with the startup scene itself. A few years ago before the mobile apps, there were fewer people in the startup scene, and those that were there had a more communal sense. Since we are

You know, it's funny. Whenever a new android feature or device comes out, there seems to be this expectation that it has to jump through all these hoops to even interest anyone. When you see all the mainstream "tech journalists" go on in th

Yeah I agree that 40 hours seems to be a good number for a week's consumption. On weekdays, the max I can think it taking is 2 hours for commuting, and 3-5 hours of TV. I am nowhere near this number myself, but I can see it being the norm f

I think one way to estimate that is to see how much media you can possibly consume per month. Obviously you can only watch one movie at a time, and though it is possible to do more, you generally listen to only one song at a time. You proba

There should still be a mechanism letting you go back to where you were. I don't see the 'clicking more until I recognize where I was' being very user friendly. I usually open up a bunch of links in a new tab and then go read them. When I r

That's not true. An article written on Friday referring to Friday probably means the previous Friday.

That is a very confusing article. I can't tell whether they are saying it is a good thing or not. When they say "on Friday" in the first paragraph, do they mean today or last week? Towards the end of the article, it says that sales were ban

Their solution also only involves projecting a solid colour into the peripheral view. Actual peripheral view for our eyes can make out details and shapes, so it is not to emulate vision but to "reduce fatigue."

Following from that logic, what about the harm that Apple is doing to the Android ecosystem by preventing the sale of these phones when they are supposed to be sold? If Apple can't prove what it claims, then what of the phones that are not

First rule of Usenet is that you don't talk about Usenet :) It is better to keep a low profile. However, I do think that giganews is quite good.

In most cases an API is used to increase the visibility of the company and its services. In some cases, it can be an additional source of income based around usage (free up to a certain number of hits). I think it is meant to be a mutually-

I don't see the big deal. You can make the same argument about the Blackberry when it first came out, and the Palm devices before it, and so on. People are easier to persuade when you mimic the look they want and differentiate on features.
