Absolutely. It's not a very sexy language, and I can't stomach a lot of JEE, but the language and the jvm are absolute workhorses. Especially when you're dealing with high performance networking code.

My SO is a licensed engineer and there's little or no ageism there... Just as you report, they're valued even more as they age, even if they remain a line engineer.

Not surprising. I know quite a lot of professionals that took a couple of years off to care for babies and can't find work. As a corollary, I've also seen quite a few engineers that were just slightly out of date get passed over.

It's so easy to wrongly screen out senior devs for the reasons you mention. I've seen JR devs want to ask tricky algorithm questions, because that's still fresh in their minds from school... I've seen mid level devs ask the framework gotch

Definitely. Having grown up poor and rural, but with a kid that attends a private school in a city, I am amazed at the opportunities he will have that we didn't at his age. Sure, we were all told we could be doctors or lawyers or industry
