You can rant against it all you want, but we already live much longer than is justifiable from the evolutionary perspective. If it was up to the evolution alone, we wouldn’t live past 50. So try to make something of your life while it lasts

Yep. Where I work there are _a lot_ of efforts underway in that direction. Put simply, standard transformers are great, but they’re very expensive, both to train and to do inference with. They also need enormous datasets. We need architectu

Turkey by the way also blocks porn. This is surprising for tourists, but at the same time not surprising for a predominantly Muslim country.

+1. Early screening is basically just grep for the right verbiage. As a rule, recruiters are not technical. Some of your interviewers also won’t be technical, might also be worth keeping that in mind.

Maybe we should stop using SSNs for things they were never intended for. Crazy talk, I know.

Might as well just skip all the intermediate steps and move the office to Austin. Twitter will fit right in.

I enjoy difficult work in my area of expertise a lot more, and dread boilerplate work, and work in unfamiliar domains that takes time for RTFM and trial and error. As to my pay, let’s just say I’m not complaining, especially when I get to d

On iOS it’s only from a pre approved list. Want to use a less censored search like Brave? Nope, unless you use something other than Safari.

You don’t know if your shit works just from “types”, and formal methods are not applicable to anything real. You’re arguing for the sake of argument, you know I’m right.

Fire everyone and make themselves redundant? Please. You're also assuming the amount of non-bullshit work would stay constant, which it won't. I'm doing a ton more non-bullshit work today thanks to LLMs than I did 2 years ago

Truth be told, most big tech teams could benefit from significant thinning. I work in one (at a FANG) where half the people don't seem to be doing much at all, and the remaining half shoulders all the load. The same iron law held in al

There are, broadly speaking, two types of negative results. The most numerous one is when the researcher tried a thing but does not understand why the thing did not work. There are so many knobs that just from the plain combinatorial perspe

If you don’t have tests you don’t know if your shit works, and your team size can be at most 1. I even write broad coverage tests in my private repo to have a modicum of assurance that when I change things the remaining code still works.

That’s the tragedy of all research - very few negative results get published. For all I know most of the things I’m working on at the moment have been tried and discarded

Belgium showed black people in a zoo until the 60s, and women did not have voting rights in “enlightened” Switzerland until 1971. Holier than thou attitudes in Europe are a product of fairly recent brainwashing.

Thing is though, I work in this field. I do not see it handling the non-bullshit part of my job in my lifetime, the various crazy claims notwithstanding. For that it’d need cognition. Nobody has a foggiest clue how to do that.

Anecdotal is when someone else told you something and you used that data without verifying. The correct term in this case is “empirical”.

Those are not going to bear impressive fruit. People who grow tomatoes for sale almost exclusively plant hybrids. Making hybrid seeds is even more involved, and they cost more, but the crop is much larger, so it’s worth the hassle.

If we’re talking the peak flavor tomato that “capitalism” purportedly can’t produce, that is only available when you pick it from the vine, already ripe. It is true that tomatoes will ripen if picked “brown”, but they’re less flavorful than

Simple: quality tomatoes are hard to transport and they don’t last when on the shelf. The closest thing to a “real” farm tomato you can buy at a reasonable price is “Kumato” from Trader Joe’s. It’s a pale imitation of a real tomato picked o

I had the same thoughts when watching this. Cucumbers either require twine, in which case they grow quite tall), or each plant will take up half that raised bed. Tomatoes are not planted directly from a seed, you first need to grow seedling

Just today I had GPT4 implement a SwiftUI based UI for a prototype I’m working on. I was able to get it to work with minimal tweaks within 15 minutes even though I know next to nothing about SwiftUI (I’m mainly a systems person these days).
