Strange, we definitely have a free tier (and have had one for years). Our current free plan includes 10k events a month. But yes, hosting it yourself is the ultimate free tier. Obvious disclaimer, I work at Sentry.

Sentry ( https://github.com/getsentry/sentry ) has a React frontend but it's a big enough project that it's less ideal for learning.

Agreed. While a lot of other uses may be more profound in the long run, this one seems most achievable in the short (least amount of security concerns and consumer education).
