If it's all the same, why use separate files?

The original gameboy has 8K of RAM and the first and second gen pokemon games run on it. Most of the hard work is done by the graphics and sound hardware. Fairly large games though.

Array languages like APL/K/J can be tremendously fast for an interpreter, since each bytecode works on entire arrays at a time. Not quite as fast as say, C or C++ compiled with a modern compiler, but I think they can match other

That's a poor analogy. It calls itself a string function but isn't. So it's more like a airsoft gun that actually shoots bullets, but you don't know until you decide to shoot yourself in the leg to see what it feels li

It's very different when you can see the side effect right there, vs happening somewhere else entirely.

It's very different from phones, where you don't need to keep your eyes on the road to avoid ramming your 3000lb metal box into the car in front of you. Tactile controls facilitate use without having to look at them, so you can ke

Tactile feedback allows you to use controls without taking your eyes off the road. Do you really want the opposite of this in a car?

I think this is roughly similar to what the xlengine guy ( http://xlengine.com/ ) is doing.

Turbos do not make anything more fuel efficient, they simply allow you to have the fuel efficiency of a small engine off boost, and match the power of a larger engine while on boost. It's still a tradeoff however, there's always

I think a good way to understand how they work is by implementing a simple Scheme interpreter that explicitly passes around the continuations of the guest language. This page helped me quite a bit a few years ago http://blog.thei

It's the same as any other compiler, just generate javascript out of the backend.

Conceptually? I'd say it can be tedious, if done by hand, but the concepts are pretty simple.

Lack of curved surfaces is not a fundamental flaw of a voxel representation, blocky is just the most common way of rendering them.

It's interesting you use that as an example, because 'well regulated', at the time in which the law was written, meant well-equipped and in proper working order.

I think direct threading is usually implemented just by reducing the indirection another level, e.g. goto *lp rather than goto **lp You could implement an interpreter with generated JMP instructions, which might be called dire

Of course, with proper tail calls, you can get generators and any kind of control structure almost for free :)

To be fair, Doom did not use raycasting either, but yes, the underworld games were significantly more advanced at the time.

It's a common misconception, but Doom uses a BSP-tree based renderer, not raycasting.

That's a similar idea to one of the interpreters in SICP, where for each node in a lisp expression, you compile a closure with the code that knows how to evaluate itself. This way you can save on parsing the same structure multiple tim

Jython compiles to JVM bytecode actually. That bytecode consists of a lot of calls to methods implemented in java though.
