I think -webkit-image-set is a much better approach.

Great pattern! Are there any ruby gems that implement the same?

Retina support is good. But why does it force the discrete graphic card? Official Twitter app does it as well for some reason.

Should probably use stop() before animating or else there's a funny effect if I click the fields back and forth really fast.

I've been using the BEM approach only for my CSS and JS. Don't need the automated tools to build my HTML markup. But even for CSS and JS it's a blessing. So much more organized and easier to work with.

Doesn't work for me behind a corporate firewall. This might be a big problem, since the app is mainly targeted for business use. Does anyone know which ports does it use?

Is it windows only? A shame if it is. I would love to hack around with it on a mac.

Sure, you don't need a designer from day one to build something, if you are OK with a poorly designed product.

Yes and no. By design I also mean interaction with the product, animations, etc. Animations that you've written for the first design draft might not make sense anymore with the new design. So new code required. So is for markup and JS code.

I disagree. If you just focus on coding, you will miss key usability issues that a good designer wouldn't miss. In the end when you do hire a designer, you will have to rewrite a lot of your code to fix these issues.
