It's why I am learning Zig instead of Rust really. I think it is more like C, and is a lot less to bite off. Probably a wise choice for Gleam, but I do like Haskell/Idris syntax too wrt to types.

Erlang is the functional language, but the OTP (Open Telecom Platform)is the collection of Erlang libraries or middleware that give it its concurrency prowess. It runs on the BEAM, a VM for Erlang. It goes back to 1998 or thereabouts, and w

I'm interested in Erlang, since I first heard about it when I wanted to write plugins or work on the Wings3D program back in 2003 or 2004. I chose playing with LFE over Elixir, because I prefer Lisp syntax to Ruby-like syntax, but limi

I am back to learning Zig for the way it addresses some pitfalls in C, but really because it is so easy for cross-platform work. Compiling a program to a Windows exe on my 2011 iMac Pro and then running it on my Windows machine was so easy

I think someone has translated this to J, but I am trying on my own to practice my J-fu by implementing it in my own way. Then I usually open it up to the J experts on the mailing list, and my learning takes off. There are some awesomely sm

The right tool for the job. If you are building a huge website with input forms, videos, data collection, ML algorithms, yes then you wouldn't do the whole thing in APL or J even if you could. Python is big in ML because packages for w

To some APL and J are the equivalent of C to assembler. It is not obfuscated, it is concise: brief but comprehensive, and easy to understand if you take the time to learn it like you would other PLs. I think Ken Iverson's "Notatio

I think you're right. Aaron Hsu's work in APL is inspiring and awesome. The source code to his data parallel compiler hosted on the GPU is 17 lines of APL! Read the abstract to his paper here: https://scholarworks.iu.ed

Yes J does attempt to be a concise notation like mathematical notation for working with concepts in a manageable way. Like mathematical notation it takes effort to learn the meanings of the symbols, however, once learned you require less bo

I will stay with Julia because although it gets touted as a general purpose language it's audience is predominantly in the sciences, and it is fast. The article mentions the program fine tuning itself which reminded me of genetic progr

I love anything that hooks me subject-wise to keep learning J. I always get charged to ply my J skills and learn from others. I tried to run a batch of simulations for x amount of days with the default number of people in the code as follow

Mark, I love all of your work. Well, except your Java stuff, but that was due to my bias against Java! I am going to buy this right away, and see if Hy ticks more boxes for me now. Looking forward to it.

Aaron Hsu, the author, is now a complete APL (Dyalog) advocate. I similarly have gone from Lisp to J, and now APL. I read the book "Mr. Babbage's Secret: The Tale of a Cypher and Apl". It is more of a history narrative meldin
