For GPU: AMD (but not _too_ cutting edge is the easy answer here). Any of the Radeon 6000 series will work well out of the box with recent open source kernels. CPU wize Intel/AMD does not matter.

My best useless use of dd was in the Ubuntu 16.04 days. I was at a satellite office with all windows PCs for the day, so used a live disk to get a decent environment to get things done. Only problem was that the DVD drive kept spinning down

Surely it would cool below the point where Co2 becomes solid (most of the atmosphere is Co2). Imagine walking around on fields of Co2 :)
