Shenandoah and ZGC collectors have worse case pauses of ~10ms and average pauses of 0.5ms . The average pause is faster than malloc() sometimes in C, so you won't really be introducing more latency than C does. The other option is to a

I would push rate limiting to the load balancer, HAProxy or Nginx, but that's just me. If you have a round-robin LB in front you just set each instance to limit at 1/nodes rate, that way you don't have to share any state. If

They didn't mention Java as a possible solution, even though its GC's are far better than anything else out there. I have nothing against Rust but if I was at a startup I would save my innovation points for where they're mand

They redefined the org from non-profit to "capped profit", whatever that means. They're directly selling GPT 3 even though they originally said they wouldn't release it because of potential bad uses. They paid MS a ton o

I reason the difference is mostly when metaprogramming can happen. In Java, redefining or adding code is very explicit, it can't just happen whenever. Same with C#. And there are lots of rules. A class can't modify itself, and the

Metaprogramming doesn't need to have a performance impact. VM languages like Java, C#, and JS allow you do define and modify code at runtime JS you can redefine anything, Java support is pretty good, C# better support is coming with ge

I really appreciate the in-depth replies on HN. Something Reddit lost ages ago. I gotta say your posts have introduced me to a lot of dark magic in the JVM that isn't really documented anywhere unless you count source code. Much apprec

Its pretty funny that after 20 years we're off the right side of this graph by 100X right? Current chips are somewhere between "internal combustion engine" and "surface of the sun"

there's free libraries, I used a bunch of them. I guess I'm just asking you to trust me that's its not nearly as good as in Java. C# is a better language, there's no question. But I jumped off the MS bandwagon years ago

Kotlin allows Google to hang out in Java 8 forever. If they want new features they can just add them at the Kotlin layer. Insulates them from OpenJDK and any changes Oracle wants to make. All great opportunities to fragment the Java ecosyst

its fun to trash talk PHP who cares if statements are accurate. PHP sucks because of the dollar signs everywhere. From a distance Wordpress code looks like Nigerian Prince emails. And crazy coding conventions like mysql_real_escape_string.

Maybe its not possible to regulate such a high current at gigahertz speeds off chip? The board traces and pins might have inductance high enough to negate smoothing capacitors at these speeds?

can someone calculate the watts/meter^2 on this chip, for science? Eyeballing the chip, it looks like ~5cm^2? This would mean it puts out 500,000watt-meter^2 or about 50 times the heat of the surface of the sun. Do we have cameras fast

This is true in a way, but at the same time they mostly achieve it through overclocking. The cost is massive power consumption. I'm curious how one of their brand new chips would perform next to one from 5-7 years ago overclocked to th

Intel iterates more on its naming scheme than CPU's these days. At least it fits well with the "its over 9000" meme, which would make a great commercial for these chips. It is impressive they managed to make a chip that uses
