I did long range (50km) radio links in the Swedish army 10 years ago. If you want to have the best possible impact I suggest you work with existing telecom companies and ISPs. They have the knowledge and the resources. Nothing you can hack

Yep. > a firm maximizes profit by producing that quantity of output where marginal revenue equals marginal costs. This is a pretty fundamental result in microeconomics. The profit maximization section of the wiki article explains it quit

I feel this at my current job. I’m currently tearing down a “well abstracted” api and instead exposing the underlying tables more directly because no one knows how it works and adding new features to it is a PITA. At a glance it’s a lovely

Yes! It’s really good. I’m mostly a data guy with a bit of rails experience and i’m learning a lot that i think will be useful outside of just Rust.

I’m reading Zero to production in rust by Luca Palmieri. My goal is to have a small and cheap little open source app running on hetzner with good CI/CD and metrics for tiny money. I still haven’t figured it what to build though.

I don’t remember in detail but it wasn’t obvious for me how to set it up, which version to use, it was difficult to reason about error messages, etc. I used the docker image overv/openstreetmap-tile-server for the tiles. The isochrones

I did a similar thing but with graphhopper for routing since it supports gtfs for public transit. I was just barely able to host tiles for and travelroute Sweden on a 16GB M1 MBP. It wasn’t fun though, graphhopper felt yanky and the travel

We use datadog logs. It’s quite pricey though so we have short retention but the interface is great so if your volumes aren’t huge I think it’s a good choice.
