Harrop is known in the Haskell community for being a hater. Most of his remarks here are opinion, which is fine. Lots of people don't like Haskell - that's also fine, but pieces like these hurt the community because it will both p

The hard part is figuring out what that should look like. There are hardly any purely functional game libraries (graphics, physics, sound) so to say that an entire engine sounds horrible makes no sense. What would that horrible even look li

It's disappointing to see this post makes no mention of any ML style functional language or even Rust. It's hard to take a post with this kind of title (and predictions) seriously when it doesn't even mention the big (relativ

It seems to me that web design trends tend to change faster than most people's patience for maintaining their personal site, so it makes sense that anyone with a sufficient amount of work to do who is not a web designer would choose a

Ahh - I thought you may have read my articles on HN or Reddit - how self centered of me :) Yes, there's no 'Renderable' typeclass but there are 'Primitive's. There are no laws that the 'Primitive' typecla

Hey, you're talking about my library Renderable - and I'm totally up to finding a more idiomatic way to express the problem. It just so happened that type classes were the easiest way to do that.

These outcomes assume you can live rich (having ~98 coins) in the same space as poor pirates without them stabbing you and taking your coins! Real pirates would distribute more evenly for fear of death after distribution.

This is significantly more interesting than writing a PHP game server. Haskell is different enough from C like languages that you can't borrow patterns from existing implementations. There's a lot of unexplored territory in Haskel

Sometimes it's a matter of time, not money. If you're prototyping a complicated set of parts you'll quickly find that ordering parts from a service results in a days long development cycle instead of minutes. I print many sma

Not being able to pass functions as values is a show stopper - it's arguably the single most important tenet of functional languages.

Sometimes I really wish I could write nice dependently typed Haskell, but then I think it would be easier and more beneficial to just learn Agda or Idris.
