The community needs to exercise some collective editorial discretion. If an institution hopes to serve some curatorial purpose, it needs to make choices about what merits inclusion and what doesn't. Asking "the community" to collectively ex

Do we really need people combing through every page of C2 and submitting every page? Don't you think the recent C2 story encouraged people to check out C2 for themselves? This seems to happen to every site that gets a single story submissio

At least since Jobs has been back. There was some fairly ill-conceived if not exactly malevolently-designed stuff coming out of Cupertino during the interregnum. A recent linked piece nailed Apple's strengths and weaknesses: If Steve uses i

Isn't it possible that Gruber, you know, actually has a mind, and that he uses it? In my experience there are more knee-jerk haters of companies or even ideas that there are unthinking "fanboys." While Gruber can be very hard on people

I don't disagree that the pair is far free the be-all end-all of primitive data structures. On the contrary, when I'm programming in Clojure, most of my data structures are made out of hashes and vectors. And most definitely, the need to wa

I agree that sometimes pursuing prima facie "ridiculous" ideas to their logic conclusions can sometimes provide insights into problems that have far more real-world utility than you might ever expect when you start down the path.

It's difficult to gauge how serious this proposal slash thought experiment is. The nice thing about a pair is the way it naturally lends itself to iterative processing: There's the CAR and the CDR, the first and the rest. (Are the keys in t

What is the point of down-voting the above comment? You partake in petty, gratuitously punitive, anti-social behavior—to what end? Aside from the hard-on you get from your meaningless exercise of illusory power, does it amount to anything?

People don't seem to be getting the point. If I knew where the submitters of links like this were, I'd pay them a visit with a 2×4. I stopped reading Reddit because of noise like this. I get lectured by pedantic HN guideline-quoters a lot;

Yeah, you're wrong. Apple's acceptance of paragraph three of the GPL (assuming version two) doesn't require that "the release of this code should be an item on the product launch checklist." That's all I was saying: "Should" is a word handy

What I find interesting about this is what happens when the mythical iPhone 5 gets released and Verizon has a $50-100 iPhone 4 to sell. Until now (in the U.S.) there's only been a inexpensive iPhone for AT&T.

Are such stats (readily) available? As the inventory in the app store ages, I hope Apple applies adjustments to its rankings to identify "zombie" apps, those that perhaps had their day but have grown long in the tooth. I'm not suggesting th

What is the value of the metric? And what metric? App submissions per unit time? I suppose that metric has some value. The projected date that the Google app store will have more apps than Apple's iOS app store is not a metric: it's a nai

This story is a waste of time. The entire premise of the "undermine Facebook's technology" strategy is false: the whole point of GPL (and MIT and...) licensed code is that vendors cannot screw customers in the way the author is suggesting.

Yes, speculating i.e. talking out of your ass is offensive. It wastes everyone's time. It's a dangerous trend. Baseless speculation forms the bedrock of the vast majority of content that appears on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News. It is dangerous

If you take license violations very seriously, then I imagine that an audit of your computer would reveal no movies, songs, fonts, or applications that are not properly licensed, right? Is Apple out of compliance with the license? Perhaps.
