Compiling software is not trivial, that's why you have macports, fink, etc... Like you have apt, portage, pacmacn... on Linux distros or ports on FreeBSD.

Not flaming, just plain curiosity, but what open source/free software have you found that doesn't work on osx? I switched to Mac several years ago and any piece of software I've needed has worked, first using macports and now homebrew.

Exactly, how does a programming language scale or not-scale? Ruby might be slower and hungrier (memory) than other languages but it's the applications that might or might not-scale.
