How is the distance getting estimated? Like another comment said, if a good distance estimator is provided this simplifies the task. Is there a baseline that uses distance in its input as well?

Cool, I'll definitely look into these types of algorithms. Do you have exposure to these? I'm still a 3rd year undergrad and my maths isn't strong enough yet to grok some of the crazier algorithms.

In the article, you say the gradient of 2x + y^8 is [1, 7y^8]. Shouldn't it be [2, 7y^8]?
