Here you are comparing publishing an Atom post to XMPP and publishing a simple message. It will more look like something like that (even if it's not valid). <iq type='set' to='pubsub.shakespeare.lit'

This is exactly how the XMPP network is made and how the social features that we are building around are designed :) You use the same XMPP account to login to different instances and everything is synchronized from the server your account i

On a similar way we already built a "Blog" solution on XMPP. This is relying on the Pubsub extension and some others (like https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0277.html ). Two projects are already implementing it

ActivityPub is built by the W3C and therefore relies on Web related technologies (lost of HTTP and JSON exchanged) :) Does this scale properly and how does it compare to existing solutions like XMPP Pubsub ( https://xmpp.org/

Yes but it's not sexy. Quoting Moxie Marlinspike : "…it’s entirely possible to build a federated Signal Protocol-based messenger, but I no longer believe that it is possible to build a competitive federated messenger at all"

Well looks like our government (I'm French) is having the NIH syndrome as well. Why not reusing existing solutions like XMPP + OMEMO? They can invest a few thousands euros in those projects and in a couple of open source clients. Plus

Fragmentation != decentralisation. All those XMPP servers are talking to each others, so doesn't matter where you have your account you'll be able to reach the rest of the network. Emails are working the same way

As far as I remember you needed quite big servers if you wanted to "federate" with others, like join big chatroom because Matrix will try to replicate the history and keep it in sync. Is it still the case?

The interoperability between the protocols is indeed difficult. But pushing a standard protocol is, I think, the best way to promote this compatibility. Imagine if we didn't have a standard protocol for emails (SMTP/IMAP/POP)
