OP here. I literally opened up Gemini and used the defaults. If the defaults are shit, maybe don't offer them as the default? Or, if LLMs are so smart, why doesn't it say "Hmmm, would you like to use a different model for thi

It is still like this. You just have to drag yourself away from the big sites and you will find all manner of weirdness.

I love this - and I applied the lessons to my own site. It was fascinating to see just how often I'd slapped a class on something which was never going to be re-used. Similarly, WordPress spams tonnes of classes everywhere. Most are un

We have ours in a porch - mostly because the fan is slightly noisy. I think the main consideration for any outbuilding would be whether it was water-tight, had some level of climate control, and was secure against theft.

They don't. You either have a solarthermal system to heat the water, or you use a tank to store hot water. I've previously installed an "iBoost" which diverted excess solar into an immersion heater. Heating slow(er) and

It wouldn't need to. It would start discharging at sunset and only stop at sunrise. And in winter it would spend most of its time discharging. But, as I say in the post, this is a bit of fun looking at extremes.

We didn't DIY. Our installer was happy to put the panels wherever we wanted. Our roof is an even East/West split. So one side powers our morning and the other side our afternoon.

(Author here) My roof is full on both sides. There simply isn't any more room. I do say: > As solar panels increase in efficiency, it might be more sensible to replace the panels on my roof, or add some onto a shed. Even in the dark

It's really hard to say whether something like that is impossible. I'm not aware of, for example, Google's private signing keys for Android being leaked. Sure, plenty of CAs have been breached - but not all. That suggests it

But how is that any different from the intended recipient losing control their key? Take a look at the number of people who lose their crypto keys and watch their money vanish. All encryption is broken by the virtue that key management is i

It is perfectly possible to encrypt a message such that two different keys can decrypt it. There is nothing in modern encryption that makes that impossible. See https://faculty.cc.gatech.edu/~aboldyre/papers/bbks

I can recommend "The Bees by Laline Paull". It attempts to show the world from a bee's perspective. It is terrifying, confusing, and horrific. An excellent story.

It isn't that email is taboo. It is that it is effort. I have to go to my email program. Download the patch. Upload it. And then, if I want some changes, have to copy-and-paste stuff into a reply. Then repeat. That's more effort t

OK. Let's say I clone to my local machine, make some changes, and commit. How do I submit the patch to the repo on GitHub / GitLab / CodeBerg / whatever? Presumably I need to hunt down the maintainer's email?

OK, but then I still have to do work to get that patch and integrate it into my existing systems. I don't know if you've ever used GitHub, GitLab, or CodeBerg - but PRs just appear in a list there. I don't need to do any work

I don't see it as a status thing - I see it as a convenience thing. If I want to fork your code and contribute back, that means I need to be on the same system as you. There's a bunch of Gnome projects which require me to sign up

Sure. But then I have to copy that patch, hope my email client hasn't mangled it, upload it somewhere, run an arcane command. Do you not see how much easier something like GH is?

Look at the people who are conned into buying Apple Gift Cards so that they can "pay their taxes". If they can be convinced of that, how hard will it be for a scammer to say "we've detected a problem with your phone. To
