I can only guess that people sending messages to my cancelled WhatsApp account saw only one tick. That's still meaningless to less skilled users and there's no way to tell if the user has gone forever or if they're just offli

I can confirm my mother has no idea what these ticks mean. She can't make the difference between WhatsApp and iMessage either. At the time I left, I told her so and she kept wondering why I was not getting some of her messages (the one

Having different apps is probably a step forward indeed. But (as far as I understand) just having WhatsApp installed on my phone allows them to keep an eye on my contact list. That sounds quite despicable to me.

My experience is similar. I want to add that when I left WhatsApp (~2y ago) I deleted my account. WhatsApp kept accepting messages on my behalf. People didn't know I wasn't getting their messages. I'm surprised I don't s

Well, Lockwise is 100% open source, isn't it? I'm not sure there are tools for extracting the data easily, though. This may be your point and I'd agree on that. But I've been using Lockwise for years (and the previous cl

I'll just take the occasion to reference the works of W. Brian Arthur and Paul A. David on path dependence, increasing returns and lock-in where they model the situations where technological artifacts come to dominance, often not out o

I sympathize to your comment... But at the same time I'm likely to be in the crowd of the unknowings. Could you suggest examples or a way to get an idea how fast computers can be. I've recently been amazed when cracking an old cry

I should also take advantage of the occasion to mention that I find it a pity that we don't use keyboard keys as 101 complementary buttons for the mouse/trackpad :D

It's like upvoting is not enough, here. I've witnessed that some users love their Macbooks' Touchbars, at the same time I'm surprised so few users recourse to these extremely low tech tricks. Just like the camera cover t

There's still quite a range of "dumb" phones available. A concern of mine is always: can I sync it to my computer. As far as my research went, you don't get that, at least with entry level phones from Nokia (105/106

My beloved E6 had its flaws. It was a pain to sync, the syncs were not serviceable, but at least it was syncing to my computer, not to the cloud. On this one, Symbian Anna felt better than Symbian Belle and it would have been a pain to reve

Even though it's sort of an aside, I'm glad someone mentions Psion. I'd love to check whether their keyboards are on par with the legend. I wonder how many others relate, at the global scale :)

Why can't we just have two address bars? One for general "end" user that's optimized to help them against phishing and all, another one that's just the bare plain old URL? The toolbars are customizable, why not just

This is a duplicate from https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23042207 The top comment there has many interesting links to other monuments that have been similarly captured.

I'm surprised this doesn't get up-voted. The tool automates very nicely my shell command writing process: pipe one step at a time and check the incremental results by using head to get a sample. Looks cool to me!

I was about to ask about dmoz.org. But apparently it's dead. We could probably do something with bookmark sharing à la Delicious. Good dead things for a better future.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Emscripten. Unfortunately I have no experience with it but I get that you could write a native app and also get it to work in browser with this. I also get there could be a performance penalty but hey...
