"PG's claim is the best hackers can work wherever they want. This claim is a fallacy. No amount of technical skill guarantees that you can get hired exactly where you want." Again, you're taking the "wherever they want" thing much too liter

Can you think of any examples where a particularly excellent hacker is stuck at a crappy job to pay the bills?

You're taking the point about a hacker being able to get a job anywhere far too literally. He has his pick among the top software companies and startups but, no, he probably won't land a job designing rockets for NASA.

I don't see the point you're trying to make. We're talking about freedom in hacking abilities here. If you're severely financially strapped then, yes, you're restricted. No one is saying otherwise.

Absolutely. I think the meaning of "hacker" is being diluted, I'm seeing people use it interchangeably with "programmer" on this site. When I think of great hackers, guys like Richard Stallman, Justin Frankel, or DHH come to mind. They're m

What has Facebook done that's particularly evil?

I don't think that's true. Those sites grew mostly through word of mouth. I don't consider that to be devious. What's wrong with Jimmy Wales operating a porn site? I don't see how that's related to Wikipedia.

Asking why someone is special is not a thoughtful question. This is a rare case where a troll has managed to spawn coherent anecdotes. If you read over the comments, there is no real discussion, there isn't even a topic. It's just a bunch o

I find it amusing that this site is so concerned with quality yet when such an obvious troll comes by, you're all blinded by your admiration for pg. Way to feed the trolls. I guess we know what Hacker News' kryptonite is.

I don't think the quality has declined much at all. Good articles make it to the top and the commenting is fine. Your comments were downmodded because they were petty and you have a bad attitude. When you post: "whatever downvote me, i am p

No, the point of high-level languages is that you exchange speed for simplicity and power.

You shouldn't expect privacy when sending information to someone else's server. Google records your searches, pg monitors voting, and TiVo knows what you're watching on TV. The data associated with a user is valuable in improving the produc

Reformatting is not an "easy risk management technique." It's completely inaccessible to most people. I don't understand the point you're trying to make with that article. Clarkson published his account details and challenged people to expl

It's foolish to live your life in fear, checking every meal you eat for poison. There are many things that require a leap of faith. Where's your tinfoil hat? These incidents mentioned in the article have been very rare. They did a pretty go

If you installed Xcode Tools/Developer Tools, then you have a copy of gnutar. Mac OS X, like other BSD systems, include their own version of userland tools in the base system. If you want the GNU version of specific tools, you have to insta

There was nothing wrong with your factory install. As I said in a previous reply, gnutar is installed as part of Apple's Xcode Tools. It is not included by default. There is no reason to format every factory-new machine that you receive. Th
