Because untrustworthy websites can piggyback on the brand name. "Download ffmpeg here: sudo bash -c ..." And then the installation script from our malicious site installs ffmpeg just fine, plus some stuff you have no idea about. A

Edit : just tried it for serving a fastapi. It's fantastic. Instant TLS via Let's Encrypt. There may be other webservers that are equally easy, but this one is certainly easier than Apache or ngninx, which I used so far. Love it.

I finally started migrating our app from Heroku to Hetzner. Started by moving Postgres, and boy, what a difference in performance. I pay 1/5th of what I previously paid, and performance is through the roof. Like, as if we had rewritten

Because the server types you get for the price of a single Heroku dyno are incredibly beefy. And suddenly you need a lot less dynos. Which is quite important if you start managing them yourself.

There are internal reasons as well. Letting go of people can be highly disruptive and create uncertainty in your team. It’s a very unpleasant job that can also go wrong, especially if you have to fire loads. Then there’s the perverse incent

In vscode you can click on various assets, like images or audio files, and then view them right inside vscode. If you work with datasets, the ability to inspect them is crucial. Yes ofc I can use Finder instead but in vscode I just cmd+p.

I absolutely love the idea of Zed, and I'm regularly giving it a go. Typing in Zed really feels better than VSCode. It's hard to describe, but impossible to discard once you've used it for a short while. Unfortunately, ther

This is absolutely fantastic. I really can't wait for the final course to be live. It's in the "shut up and take my money" category. I had so much fun with the nanoGPT videos.

Free Palestine. There, I said it. Although I think it's a rather dumb slogan, and doesn't even remotely do the situation justice. Seriously though, the notion that free speech is impaired in Germany is completely ridiculous and ju

Germany has a pretty consistent climate. Doesn't really matter where you live. Of course, that's an oversimplification, but if you're new to Germany and wonder "oh, what's the weather going to be here?", the an

I just wrote up the solution for a combinatorics problem in Typst. It was my first time using it. Wow, it is so smooth, it's unbelievable. After this little exercise I'm 100% sold. For homework-like tasks, Typst is so much easier

I once had my bank close my account because of a mistake they made (I can provide the background but it’s just a facepalming story). That meant my Bank ID was closed down, too. I asked for an appointment with the bank to resolve it but was

Unfortunately the solution presented in the article is locked to a closed cloud offering. I have nothing against those, Firebase for example is like that, but I dislike the fact that it’s hidden. “It’s just an sqlite extension”, oh and it s

I remember seeing tons of mockups for how KDE 4 should look like. One was absolutely stunning but I can’t find it anymore. I remember a mostly flat theme with the idea that an app’s settings could be on the backside of a window. The dock wa

I'm not a fan of Liquid Glass at all, but I just tried KDE again and it's certainly not there yet. Breeze has a ton of weird design decisions, rounded corners in things like list selections that don't work, and even basic und

You no longer need inner city parking, and people will be more willing to jump on public transport to skip traffic because you are not bound by the location of your own car anyway.

I work a lot with syncing code for mobile apps, and use sqlite for local dbs on the app, which I guess is fairly standard. UUIDs make sync protocols much easier to write.

It would be amazing if it could display UUIDs. SQlite doesn't support them natively, but many people store them as binary blobs. Jetbrains products realize that these binary values are UUIDs and let me edit them easily.

It seems we need a system where these failures are visible earlier. If you consider the current economy a strategy game, our game dynamics incentivise bad short-term optimisation. We can blame the MBAs, but we really should see how we can p
