What they are actually doing is deliberately entrenching an authoritarian ethno-nationalist regime. I don’t think one can say that any of their decisions are rationally made for the benefit of anyone but themselves and their supporters. The

We don’t know if their detention is lawful. Whether their detention is lawful hasn’t been litigated yet, but the fact they there’s a preliminary injunction against them doing it more that was upheld by the DC circuit court indicates that it

Except they literally just sent Venezuelans to an El Salvador prison without a judge being involved. The reason people are freaking out about this is because it actually happened already.

For the most part none of the people deported or held have even been accused of one of those crimes. Most of the Venezuelans have been deported under the Alien Enemies Act, under an extremely tenuous reading of what an “invasion” is, by cla

So… people have literally already been deported to jails in El Salvador without due process, with the government claiming that they are from a Venezuelan gang. Others have had green cards revoked and been arrested for deportation for the cr

It doesn’t, but they’ve already disappeared a number of Venezuelans because they had tattoos, so if the officers are willing, they can make it happen.

In principle as long as a state has legal hooks into a large enough part of the business it’s probably ok. Data centers are less tricky than phones because they don’t move. I’m also not sure there’s so much practical difference between a co

Realistically most criminals probably don’t even turn on ADP, so it will probably move the needle not at all.

Looks like among other things this one is leaning on a lot of economic trends that started in the 80s and hoping if you draw an arrow to the 70s no one will notice. Most economists date the big breakdown in real gdp vs real median wages to

Education is almost entirely labor and real estate. It’s a classic Baumol’s cost disease situation. Like I guess richer countries can purchase better computer labs? So yeah, it’s probably true that the US spends more per pupil because we ha

The genetic meaning is the most common usage of the word, which is evidenced by a Google search. It’s also the most obvious meaning when referring to racial minorities. If they didn’t mean genetic, then they really screwed up in their use o

Anonymization is probably an under tried idea. Various orchestras switched to blind auditions and significantly increased the number of women they hired.

I don’t think that’s true. It looks like the US has pretty similar spending to European countries at least as a percentage of GDP: https://www.oecd.org/content/dam/oecd/en/publications/report...

As far as I’ve heard, the only claim that there was an intersex condition was from the IBA and there’s a lot of reason to be suspicious of that.

Brett Devereaux talks about this in relation to the Mongols and other nomads. Yes they didn’t “own” land but if you trespassed on their grazing pastures they would absolutely use violence against you: https://acoup.blog/2020

The most famous example of that was, as far as I can tell, entirely fabricated. Algeria is famously known for being friendly to trans people. Also you’re really equating street violence, murders, and suicide to losing a boxing match?

Right but part of that is asking why your workforce isn’t representative of the available workers. If you’re disproportionately hiring some types of people you probably are hiring on race and not skill. And yes, some of this is not solvable

It simply hasn’t been long enough. I wouldn’t necessarily bet that it will, but X has lost net users and Bluesky is gaining them so if trends continue (they might not) Bluesky will overtake X, but Twitter also wasn’t built in a year.

I don’t think it’s actually true that people are “paying the same price for a worse product”. This is an area where one has to be extremely careful because it’s not the case that all the input costs are held steady so you’d see a decrease i
