They aren’t complacent. They are harassed, beaten and arrested if they object. Absolutely disgusting what the government there is doing to our Australian brothers and sisters. And of course no media coverage to speak of in the states.

I predict we are entering (or have entered) a silver age of technology where progress will be slower and less breathtaking. Rather than radical innovation we will see slower and steady progress within existing technologies. Ideally the man

Complexity sells. People in tech are generally terrified of saying “this seems too complicated” because it sounds close to “I’m not smart.” Combine with the snow-job culture of tech sales and, well, you get what we’ve ended up with.

People have lost trust in the media. Let’s trick them by having completely out of touch CEOs talk it up. Perfection.

Fun story: back in 2009 at the jvm language summit, Thomas Wuerthinger demo’d full hotswap. Method signature changes, class hierarchy, all of it. He wasn’t a sun employee at the time and the sun folks kept telling him what he was doing was

None of that will make any difference. What will work is strong families and traditional morality. That is unacceptable and therefore things will continue to get worse.

Near miss: my first job I was working on a CRUD app for a huge bank. I was dumb and it was early in the enterprise era of software and I had built my own simple O/R tool based on codegen. Not a terrible tool all things considered and

It’s luck and hard work usually. Sometimes folks get lucky. Sometimes hard work alone pays off. Usually you need both for big success. False dichotomies are lazy.

JSON isn’t a hypermedium so creating a uniform interface is hard. I don’t have a strong opinion on alternatives. GraphQL seems ok for server to server stuff.

Yep. Look at the REST/JSON API debacle that has unfolded over the last two decades. It is trivially obvious that REST is both difficult to implement and largely pointless outside of a hypermedia system, but the thought leaders never

Putting a network connection between your application abstractions was always a dicey proposition. (See EJB 1.0) Making it the entire basis for application abstraction is lunacy, the sort of extremely clever idiocy that can only occur in th
