I know, I even mentioned it. Unfortunately and understandably Guix means my WiFi won't work and there will be less stuff supported OOTB. So I'll be on Nix for foreseeable future.

Admittedly, it can be worse than sitting down and reading the manual front to back, but I did it the hard (or simple) way. I used the simple template generated during nixos-install and kept adding packages I needed. Configured them manually

This is a good one, I hope I'll have mine for that long (started 2019). Personally, I stopped worrying about dotfiles and GNU stow after joining the cult of Nix. While I gave honest attempt to everything else, Nix made it stick. Now I

I only used it for few months as a beginner, so take this as you will. VSCode works, but JetBrains Rider is probably your best bet. It just works and works really well compared to hodgepodge of extensions in vscode. Beyond these 2, you'

From what I've read Fuschia is not at all self-contained. The UI is fully driven by and targeted towards Google the search and ecosystem. But those write-ups were years ago and there hasn't been new reviews with much UI focus sinc

As someone who has never (at least knowlingly) encountered a flaskBB forum in the wild, what do you like about it? And what are your gripes about Discourse (the interface is bit whitespace-heavy and 'pop', but serviceable IMO)? Di

Honestly, I went read-only on reddit via teddit.net and blocked main domain (reddit.com) in /etc/hosts. This forces me to make a conscious choice on opening a Reddit link. All the forums that Reddit took over are making a comeback

On the contrary, as a developer, this makes GPL even more appealing to me. I don't have time, money or energy to sue someone for using my code and not giving back. But if downstream users can, and the math changes.

Pi is standard, extremely well supported, has GPIO and most people are familiar with running a container and gluing python compared to writing C (I know about micropython, but Joe PythonLearner doesn't).

I'd pay Pine64 50% markup if they'd just deliver to my damn country. Every now and them, I check their store, just itching to buys stuff and build on top, but no delivery for me. Any other similarly supported/open alternative

A Raspberry Pi sitting cupboard silently chugging along has a high chance of SD failure, but little chance of inadvertant disconnects. That's a fine tradeoff I'd say.

People should really stop using SD cards for anything halfway important with Pi's. They are proven again and again to be just ticking time bombs. With new Pi being able to boot from USB just fine, get an SSD even if it costs more.

While zerodha is on the good side of the spectrum, I have to call out couple of claims from this post. No marketing is a half-truth at best. Their app often sends notifications about blog posts and upcoming trades (IPOs etc that user did no

As someone running 29.0, Emacs development pace is amazing, if not little breakneck. 27.1 was a pretty big step-up, 28.1 is even larger. Native-compilation being the biggest improvement in probably a decade. And yet, I find myself compiling

Eventually, there will be businesses offering support contracts. And if history is any indication, MS cannot out-litigate that future. RH/IBM rose despite SCO lawsuite. If the code is there and it works, people will make use of it.

As a newbie who only learned Java and JS in bootcamp, and C in EE, Rust's tooling is absolutely phenomenal. Things just work, and that is a rare experience.
