Perhaps stolen accounts? I doubt every user is practising good security hygiene with a unique password per each account. Password leaks from other sites might well allow a motivated individual to hijack some here.

Not too long ago, Gnome calculator would freeze and crash when it tried to download currency conversion data. It would make such requests on each startup, eventually it was fixed in Ubuntu LTS but was broken for quite some time.

If it's not passing the test suite, then why is it even considered for inclusion in a distribution like Ubuntu? Ubuntu is likely used by 10s of millions of servers and desktops. I'm not sure why this kind of breakage is considered
