JWZ created a splitflap hack for xscreensaver. It includes broken flaps and missing flaps, and you can pipe text into it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZOL2jyDey0

A Solari Split-Flap Display? I love that they're making new ones! Starbucks has been putting them in their Reserve Roasteries. I'm also sort of happy with the 'modern' ones that are actually LCD screens with speakers mak

Facebook is looking into paying its employees in scrip, and now they should also be indebted to the company town? I get what you're saying, and I want to agree, but it smacks of the old Company Town that I grew up in, and the current F

FWIW, Lime appears to be trying to answer my desire for tiny carshares with their 'LimePod' branded fleet of Fiat 500s in the Seattle. I haven't tried one, yet, so I don't know how well it works, or if you can wedge a bi

Maybe, but at the other end are the bike- and scooter-share systems. I suspect the perceived cheapness of the products contributes to how many of them end up thrown off the ends of piers. Personally, I really miss Car2Go's old SMART ca

I do. If nothing else, I look for a binding arbitration opt-out, so I can engage that before whatever time period expires.

It is in Amazon's DNA to try not to brag. The US-WEST datacenters are pretty much all hydroelectric, but that says more about the incredibly low costs of hydro power in the area than the environmental benefits of it. The PR boost is ni

Car-camping is the nice way of saying "permanent homeless camps". The idea is that, if we didn't allow homeless camps to grow and spread, then it would be much more difficult to live without a permanent home in Seattle, and t

Yes, but the thing is that facial recognition IS just video compression. You take a video stream and compress it down into a timestamped stream of IDs. It's really lossy, but it's the same as OCR or Speech-to-Text -- it is a tool

Perhaps the disbelief that your piece of hardware is now useless is stronger than the disbelief in the honesty of the internet? It is amusing to me that you mention Canon, since they're one of the worst offenders I've dealt with i

Is it worth sending big lawyers who will get millions? You'll probably only get a coupon for a free ride. You're still not going to get your $25 back, but at least you'll get to sic big lawyers on the company. It isn't

Will reverse-911 bother navigating your IVR? Will their automation leave a clear message? I can tell you that calls from 911 don't come from the phone number '911'.
