Thank you. I think I have been confusing the various types of singularity here. http://yudkowsky.net/singularity/schools I have been mixing the intelligence explosion with the accessing technological progress. Ill have to give all of thi

Thanks for the comment and links. I had only ever read 'science fiction' like Ian Banks and Charles Stross Accelerando, but never any of the 'non-fiction'. The linked articles were interesting. I understand that the risk of an AI that wa

This future sounds like the present to me. The underlying worry in this article is that intelligence begets more intelligence and that the new forms of intelligence might not have the same morals/goals as the author. Beneath this worry is

I agree with the sentiment of the op, however, I dont think you can ignore the fact that so many people are willing to spend a dollar or two on an app whereas paying for access to a web site seems relatively rare (outside of the business wo

The idea of a 'habitable' planet is a cool one, but how relevant is it? Do we really expect that climate is going to be a concern by the time we are colonizing planets 600 light years away? Now that I think about it, I guess it could be th

Isn't this the exact point of the App posted? To rally people together? You claim that "rallying large groups of people is the only way to make a difference," but a large group of people is made up of individuals, and those individuals wil

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think that part of what makes the longer range nice is that it requires fewer hops and thus lower latency.

This is kinda how Montessori schools do it - at least the one here where my partner teaches. They aren't online, but the student gets to chose to some degree what they are working on, however they can only move onto the next level of a sub

I'm not 100% I agree with the grandparent, but how do you know that the income inequality would have been even worse without these regulations?

I'll take the bait. It seems possible to me that there could also be value in doing some routine tasks that you don't enjoy. Even for the top scientist/inventor/entrepreneur. I've tried to come up with a list of some reasons why, but I t

I would be very interested to see some thoughts on this subject. I go back and forth agreeing and disagreeing with the grandparent's last paragraph. Its easy to make yourself feel moral and just this way (and elitist and morally superior),
