I think this is important advice that needs to be repeated over and over and over again. The number of software developers who get caught up in the latest fashion choices, instead of carefully picking the right set of tools for the job, is

Agreed. If it stored data on a different server (allowed via CORS) then there could be some additional security, since then as a long as the JavaScript isn't subverted on the same site, you're storing encrypted data on a differ

Almost certainly not. EARN IT doesn't technically forbid encryption, it just lets an unelected board decide the legal requirements for communication without being sued into oblivion. But the unelected board will be under the control of

Yes, because that next alternative could be a scam site. When people are desperate for information, they will get it wherever they could find it, even if it is garbage. It is much better to have the good sites stay up.

Actually, JavaScript often is not good for that either. Static sites compress really well, and static HTML typically renders orders of magnitude faster than running JavaScript to create commands to eventually do the same thing. In addition,

Thanks so much for the swift fix, apology, and the current work to try to find out what happened & prevent the recurrence of the mistake. Mistakes are inevitable, especially at scale. I think taking those steps, when the inevitable mist

An action that is an honest mistake isn't disgusting; it is simply a mistake. We all make mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes is not doing anything useful. What matters is doing the right thing after the mistake is discovered. I a

This looks like a terrible but honest mistake. The repo is already back, after something like an hour and a half. The . io website is not back yet, but I suspect that takes a moment to get back running.

POSIX does not specify the path of anything. It says that "sh" is a shell, but doesn't say that "/bin/sh" is that shell. See: https://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/ I

I expect all Airlines to cancel many of their flights and have to temporarily lay off a lot of their people. It is unlikely a lot of people will be doing travel for mamy weeks, and I suspect the ramp back up to normal will be slow.

The best technique for having a PDF with extractable data is to include the data within the PDF itself. That is what LibreOffice can do, it can slip in the entire original document within a PDF. Since a compressed file is quite small, the r
