I also love this point. It hints at a rule-of-thumb I use: try to wait making an important technical choice until you can explain a pro & con of each option (or, similarly, explain when you'd use each one instead of the other).

Youtube, at least up to now, is a platform not a publisher. Part of the muddying is that it is very difficult for people to see information if it is not on one of these major publishers or platforms. Information that is legal to present, b

I do not believe there was widespread election fraud, but having a private company control what information people are allowed to see & hear is also dangerous. YouTube has the right to do this as a private company, but it's als

Right. The sed -i option is incompatible between MacOS & Linux, and it isn't in the POSIX standard. The POSIX folks don't want to add it because it's possible to do work without it, even though no one wants to. Maybe spon

I would claim that this is a technological advance that is likely to lead to many scientific advances. Perhaps a good analogy are the inventions of the microscope and telescope. They were advances in technology, which then led to advances i

If someone wants you to run code that's obfuscated, and it's not a game, it might be a good idea to ask "why"? It might be legitimate code... but it might not be. Yes, yes, some proprietary software is shipped that way

Mailing lists are still around, and they still work. Even better, you don't have to log into 50 different sites to see the discussion. They're also not necessarily beholden to a single central organization. Before doing anything f

Have you used fragment caching (in "Russian Doll" style)? In my experience, that's the key to making Rails applications fast. Ruby is slow, so there are definitely situations where it's not a good choice, but in many &qu

I think the youtube-dl folks need to talk to a lawyer quickly. Like many products, youtube-dl can be used for legal and illegal purposes (just like a baseball bat can be). However, it was foolish to include links in their documentation to w

This sounds too good to be true. I want to see a double-blind test done ASAP. I'm rather skeptical, but the potential upsides are so huge that it's worth rapid additional investigation.
