I would add, why do certain particles decay into other particles? For example, the tau particle contains nothing else, as far as we can tell, yet it decays into certain other particles (and not the same ones every time). More generally, the

"May" is pretty specious. Is there any evidence of something likely to work? I would love to see practical fusion, but I see no reason to believe it will exist soon. Someone has to figure out how to actually make it practical fir

On POSIX systems file names are not strings, they are sequences of bytes. They might not be UTF-8 or have any meaning. Python3 had to hack around this, they thought they could force everything to Unicode and discovered that doesn't wo

This just highlights difference between a student project proof-of-concept and a product... and thus, you need to know what kind of software you're developing. Monitoring the clipboard periodically, determining if there's a URL, a

I know of no requirement in the US Constitution that the US government fund the US Post Office. The US Constitution grants Congress the authority to do so if it chooses to, and historically it has chosen to. Article I, Section 8, Clause 7 o

You are not a slave. You can always leave your job, anyone can. It is appropriate to give them warning and a little time to prepare for that transition and start getting someone else. Where I live, the usual time is 2 weeks notice, though s

One partial solution: if the paper is academic research primarily funded by the government, it must be posted to the internet and available at no charge to the public. The nih already does something like this. A variant would be to eliminat

A great thing about the POSIX standard is that it's publicly available. See: https://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799.2018edition... You can see more about "command" here: https://pubs

ISO doesn't pay to develop standards, they assume others will develop the standards. Historically, the purpose was to pay for printing & distribution. That makes no sense today , but that was its historical justification.

The problem isn't that you need a majority; in many such situations you need a supermajority. It's usually not okay if your website can't be safely used by 49% of your users. In particular, Apple is notoriously slow at improv

Technically this isn't quite compatible, because it uses a different hash algorithm. git as of v2.13.0 uses a hardened sha-1 algorithm to counter the shattered attack. In normal Cases you won't see the difference.

I've used zenity to do the same kind of thing. If you're writing a simple shell script & need some simplistic local GUI interaction, zenity is great; it's easy to create / read / modify the code.
