It's been known for a long time that much of evolution happens in spurts. When the environment is fairly stable evolution is a slow refinement toward local maxima. When the environment changes there's much more selection pressure

I have not. I got interested in Light Table, but it quickly became obvious that their focus was too divergent from what I consider useful. I really have no interest in an editor built on web technologies. I find some things outright weird,

Agreed. Me, too. I just wanted to point out that customization is pretty much required for success.

Like so many things, there is no single correct answer. For myself, if I focus on diet and not worry about exercise I find that I have to eat very little if I want to lose more than a few pounds. So little that I'm miserable all the

Maybe it's going nowhere because nobody really wants to have all their things become agents working for someone else (best case) or be exploited and cause massive grief (worst case). I'd much rather have an INTRAnet of things, whe

Interesting observations. As a counterpoint, there are a couple of roundabouts between here (Phoenix) and Las Vegas, notable both because there's often fairly heavy traffic and that almost everyone on the road is from elsewhere (and th

It does not have to be. Go ahead and use nice proportional fonts and never looks back. There are certainly no shortage of them that are high quality and easy on the eyes. But for the rest of us, having a fixed width font is as important as

It's less about prescriptive vs. descriptive linguistics and more about people trying to make what they're doing sound more awesome than it is. The dilution of terms is an unfortunate side effect.

Devolution/devaluation seems very common now. I'm not sure if it's my perspective or if it's really worse that it used to be. Some examples: * ROM: something you download and install on your Android phone (as opposed to

I think reducing keystrokes is a proxy metric for reducing the time and cognitive load of accomplishing an editing task. It's easy to measure, and probably good enough to tell if you're getting anywhere, qualitatively. I don'

I do play, though not as much in the past year or so. I think there's intersection between chess and programming skill sets, but not significantly more or less than anything else using logic and attention to detail.

In my personal experience (fwiw), people who try vim and don't get it either 1) just don't want/need what vim offers, or 2) don't approach it with the "vim is an editing language" approach. If you're in th

I friend of mine who has dabbled in C for years is still pretty scared of it. He loves Go. He's gotten Go into production where he works. I think there are a lot of people like him.

The way I read it, he meant that Go is not a great language. Go is "boring" as a language. However, it actually is a great programming tool. Great as defined by how long it takes to write module X, how well module X performs

Good advice, gramps! I've also been using vim for 10 or 15 years. I typically use a couple of plugins (1-3) and that's it. I leave the key bindings alone. I've never liked vimscript and have only done a few things there. Luck
