I agree about Palantir but that’s a big deflection. And don’t patronise me. Paying your bills and paying enough attention to technical details to write good programs are in no way mutually exclusive.

Well I just hope I don’t have to use any of the software you build. What a shameful attitude.

You are in the wrong job if you don’t want to think about “nerd shit” while programming.

The whole point is that string length doesn’t necessarily give you the “length” of a “word”, and both of those terms are not well enough defined.

Don’t try and diagnose people like this please. Even if you’re qualified, and I doubt you are, it’s very insensitive.

It is all subjective, but if a large number of subjects have a consistent opinion then that is something to take seriously rather than dismiss with absurd hyperbole (“most garbage”, “mostly unreadable”).

Readability debates are usually boring because it’s so subjective, but in this case it’s just your (admitted!) unfamiliarity. Lots and lots of people would disagree with you that Go is unreadable. Go isn’t pretty or cute, but one of its str

Communism is very widely defined as a classless, moneyless, stateless society. So no, it has not existed in any modern society. Criticise the Soviet Union all you like – any good Marxist should do the same – but this is a very weak put-down

The less the government meddles the better – except for at least two very deep classes of meddling? I mean I definitely agree that society should protect what you mention - so maybe the “free market” frame isn’t really useful enough. I’m ma

> Safari (Kept alive by Apple cultists) This is a very silly thing to say given the widespread popularity of Apple products. There’s plenty of valid criticisms of Apple, but it being a “cult” is just not a serious or mature argument.

A stream is not necessarily always better than an array, of course it depends on the situation. They are different things. But if you find yourself with a flow of data that you don't want to buffer entirely in memory before you process

Kind of wish I had the time/energy to help out here cos I'm motivated and interested, but I don't, so I'll just say thanks for the effort and write-up! The emacs-devel thread is interesting too: https://lists.

You need to read more carefully what I’ve written, I’ve never suggested that large-breasted women don’t exist or shouldn’t be represented, I talked about the trends and tendencies. I’ve been quite precise in what I’ve written. I’m also quit

No-one has complained about “attractive women in games”, that is a mischaracterisation. “Attractive” is a subjective judgement anyway. People have complained about the predominance of women in video games adhering to a particular set of bea

An economic or social class is a different thing to a race, nationality, or gender, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that it is treated differently.

I’m interested in capability systems, have wondered about a project like this before, and you may well be onto something, but the self-important (and, as far as I got, insubstantial) philosophy is extremely off-putting.

Pointless, unless you’re a cynic and don’t mind relying on LLMs for the work you’ve “studied” for. Doing the work yourself is the entire point.

Of course I agree that the right thing is some sort of middle ground, of roughly what you lay out. But the current hegemonic position is that of metrics-supremacy, so I feel I have to argue most strongly against that to get us to that middl
