I wrote one a little while back, for MySQL and PostgreSQL, that's just a bash script. I've found it handy a few times. https://github.com/dwb/dogfish

Absolutely, but I'd also add that what works in one language/environment may not work in another. I wouldn't be surprised if writing Haskell-style code in Python didn't work out that well, for example!

You can do exactly the same kind of pattern matching in Haskell, but that's not at all the point of the article. It's equivalent to writing the conditional, it doesn't remove it. publish :: Bool -> IO () publish

A library can very easily provide, along with the kit components, convenience functions that perform common tasks - like matchCaseInsensitive or whatever. The point I took from the post is that, regardless of how the final public API is pre

Try it before you knock it. I might have said something similar before getting into Haskell, but now I'm nodding along happily. Dealing in meaningful data types with small composable functions is very pleasant for me now.

It seems to me that it would be better to address step 6, where programmer B adds cruft to the abstraction rather than re-working it. I appreciate that pragmatics sometimes dictates that duplication is the right option, but instead of mostl

Sure you can: http://omz-software.com/pythonista/ But I know, you meant full-on apps. If we lived in a world where there were only locked-down, iOS-type computers, I'd agree with your indignation. But I think ther

"Wall of text" is usually reserved for people who don't use paragraph breaks; such a complaint is unfair on a perfectly well-formatted page. If you want it narrower, maybe make your window smaller?

This is my take on this: uses a tagging convention on your EC2 instances. Can also run commands in parallel over a set of instances. https://github.com/madebymany/moltar http://madebymany.com/blog/

Linus doesn't deserve to be in his position. Technical merit doesn't excuse being a horrible manager of people.

Shanley Kane criticised Linus and got her and her family's addresses posted, death threats, rape threats, and other horrific abuse. If you think gender isn't an issue, you haven't educated yourself well enough.

Where I work, before Slack, we had Campfire and only us developers bothered to sign up for it, get the client, etc. We switched to Slack and suddenly everyone was on it. UX matters so much. We don't have time to tend an IRC server and

The web is, by and large, a distracting, surveilling mess with ads. At least ads in the real world are just distracting (the surveillance comes from elsewhere). So no, I'll keep my ad blocker thanks.

We love Docker where I work, but running it in production is a big challenge — there's no "just" using it. We build packages of Rails apps and dependencies quite happily. Sure, you have to make sure all dependencies are packa

It's not about speed, it's about friction. I used many editors (like TextMate, Notepad++, that kind of thing) before Vim, and once I got into it, I saw the awkwardness I'd experienced in other editors vanish. I probably input
