Also sounds a bit like Dunning Kruger. It looks easy because people are ignorant of how hard the problem is. Many years ago I built a search engine for a very big discussion board website, which had hundreds of millions of messages. Keep in

Interestingly the commit history goes back 2 years and the first commit looks like it's already a somewhat working OS. All commits by one person.

My favorite phrases in academic papers are "leaves a lot to be desired", and of course "towards a ...." in the title.

I started out in print journalism in the 90s, it was such a cool thing back then in my country. I switched to internet content when it just started because it was exciting, not because I foresaw any decline of journalism on the horizon. And

You don't need to remember the details of a specific problem. Almost all the problems I've encountered interviewing for FAANGs were not found on such sites. You do need to remember classes of problems - graph traversal, tree trave

Reminds me of a C++ pattern some guy I worked with years ago used to love to simplify complex if checks - using do...while(false) to create a scope you can easily break out of. e.g. bool success = false; do { if (!someCondition)

Improve existing stuff, add new stuff. That can be done with backwards compatibility if you have a well defined API. I haven't looked at Gnome's API in years so I'm not sure what's its state, but one shining example for

Actually this numbering scheme conveys to me, intuitively, that changes are more gradual and hints at backwards compatibility. If there's no major/minor/patch semantics I just assume versions are small incremental additions.
