Direct SQL from the client definitely isn't for everyone, but these problems aren't insurmountable. Caching: This is true of any API allowing, for example, advanced search. If you can get by without it, great, but it's often

I'm currently working on a project to fully expose SQL to clients in some reasonable fashion. It's not going to be a great fit for every application, obviously, but just allowing users to filter any data any way they want by defau

No, databases that support multiple connections "properly" make sure that the connections are isolated, a connection only sees committed data and can run any valid transaction at any time. It's actually a large part of databa

I don't have any first-hand experience, but here in the Czech Republic (not rich by any means, but still pretty up there) there are some places that have the reputation of ghettos. They're mostly located in border areas, which had

The worse job you'd leave still need to exist, it's just going to be someone else toiling in unreasonable conditions. Sure, "get a better job" is something people in low-paying jobs should strive for, but it's selfi

I'd rather have the suggestions, I don't take hints from computer software personally :) Sometimes I just misremember a particular command (i.e. "submodule" vs "submodules").

An interesting UI paradigm I've run across [0] is using a keyboard-accessible hierarchical menu for all actions. It's similar to how AutoCAD works, but the "commands" you type are actually just sequences of menu hints. M

Regarding email, I spent some tens of hours setting it up, including implementing DKIM, DMARC, SPF and getting my mail delivered to Gmail and O365. That was over a year ago and things mostly just work with the occasional upgrade or configur

Oh, alright. I know T-SQL and have actually missed variables in PostgreSQL before. Just please don't shorten it to "SQL", it's only one dialect of many.

What are you referring to as "SQL"? As far as I know, ISO-standard SQL doesn't have variables outside of its procedural language. I'm also not aware of any SQL-wide naming conventions. But I haven't read any of the

Computer systems have gotten much more complicated. The closest you can get to the "full stack" ideal is probably Microsoft, and even they've given up on maintaining a web browser. Full-stack worked for a while, but nowadays

Agree with array/list, we don't need more contiguous chunks of memory, but tuples are very different, if only because they allow elements of different types. They're really more ad-hoc unnamed structs than collections.

Yeah, SFF PC of that era can be had for sometimes RPi-level prices. My grandma has one and it's still more powerful than most low-end laptops people use. I've also got one as a home server, it's plenty powerful for that too.
