I agree, I'm just speculating on California's justification for the C&D, assuming it isn't simply a result of ignorance of how bitcoin works and the role of the Bitcoin Foundation.

The best argument in favor of the C&D I can think of is that the Bitcoin Foundation pays a salary to the lead developer of the reference client and daemon.

Bitcoin itself can be used anonymously if one is careful. However, there should never had been any expectation of anonymity when exchanging for another currency that is not anonymous, like a USD bank transfer.

What about 100 dollar bills in particular? I would be curious to see what percentage of transactions using these bills involve tax evasion, drugs, or other illegal activity.

The linked post doesn't make it very clear, but the evidence that OVH itself was compromised is that two otherwise unrelated bitcoin services running on OVH (slush's pool and bitcoin-central) were compromised at around the same time.

The original owner of mtgox had the domain name lying around. As far as I know, even the original mtgox bitcoin exchange shared no code with a card exchange.

The power numbers cited by this article are very inaccurate when considering current mining hardware and software. "* Electricity consumption is estimated based on power consumption of 650 Watts per gigahash and electricity price of 15 cent

Bitcoin was announced on a cryptography mailing list and released to the public at most a week after the blockchain was created, as proven by the headline in the genesis block. The Bitcoin whitepaper was released months earlier. Anyone had

It would mean they are, on average, spending 1/5 of the sum of the transactions' inputs. Bitcoin wallets generally contain multiple addresses, and transactions will be created with inputs associated with only a subset of these addresses.

Amazon charges customers' credit cards when the item ships, not when the order is placed. There is plenty of time to get a few confirmations in before shipping as Amazon doesn't ship instantly after an order is placed.

>Today, now more than before, it is illegal to modify a device you have bought with your own money. To be fair, when someone buys a locked phone, they are really buying it with a combination of their own money and the carrier's money.

No. CPUs are useless for mining, and the only GPU instance AWS offers uses Nvidia GPUs, which are about 5x worse than the equivalent AMD/ATI GPUs. Even if AWS had AMD/ATI GPU instances, the costs would probably be too high.

Bitcoin's proof-of-work system requires a problem that is difficult to solve, has a predictable and adjustable difficulty, and allows solutions to be verified easily. Many hash functions, in Bitcoin's case, SHA-256, meet these requirements

I trust Coinbase with a small amount of coins. Similar to how no one walks around with all of their USD as cash in their wallet, it makes sense to only fund an mobile app/third-party wallet with enough bitcoins for convenient spending. Lo
