I don't really think that qualifies as rent-seeking... it's just that they have a good product that is expensive. You are free to use a product that is cheaper and worse.

Sure, that would fix the bug immediately in front of you, but what if the same bug exists in several of the other copies of the dependency? Are you going to be able to track all of the occurrences down? I think that's the big tradeoff.

I$ is short for instruction cache ($ -> "cash" -> cache). Since kdb has so little code, more of it fits into the instruction cache at once.

I think this is a good decision -- crypto is not a standard library thing and including it in the first place was a mistake. I assume someone will take the liberty of mirroring the crypt library onto pypi and everyone can just install that

I feel like typing len(...) is not that bad, compared to how verbose "default if var_to_test is None else var_to_test" is (compared to "var_to_test or default"). But I agree it is nice -- I wish Python had the ?? operato

I think if you're already documenting function argument types, there is no point. But in my experience it's unworkable to ask people to write full documentation for every function, but requiring type hints is not as hard and is ne

I think you can have as many rules as you want as long as there's something like black or rustfmt, just a script you run that auto-formats your code. You never have to worry about the rules because there is no configuration thus nothin

I think type annotations are extremely valuable even if you don't use mypy. On my team we basically use them as comments that are understood by the IDE, but aren't enforced. Of course comments can lie, but appeasing mypy really is

It kind of works, you just have to use `typing.get_annotations(func)` instead of `func.__annotations__`. Although if you aren't importing the types used in your annotations that isn't going to work... I would guess that's rar

I think in practice that increases the need for TYPE_CHECKING. If you use deferred annotations, and you don't import the types you use, type checkers and IDEs will complain, and go to definition won't work. But if you import the t

That's correct. I assume it was initially played with a standard deck but they now have custom decks.

The US is like this too. Almost no American cities have reliable public transit, and even in those that do, like NYC or Chicago, the stations are pretty filthy in my experience. Also, I feel like this is an unusually hostile comment.

A counterargument here is the effects on internal transparency. If a quant firm knows its employees can leave and join a competitor tomorrow, they will be less forthcoming with IP. The lack of openness could lead to lower productivity withi

Honestly it probably has the opposite effect. I can imagine iPhone 12 owners upgrading because they think their current phone is unsafe.

I would check out Celeste or Shovel Knight. Neither is exactly the run and gun style of Contra or Jazz. However, Celeste is extraordinarily polished with best-in-class controls and movement, and Shovel Knight borrows heavily from classics l

I think a standard library is not negative, but rather acts as a multiplier for decisions. The C++ std::unordered_map designers made a bad decision (requiring buckets to be iterable) and now, like you say, it's hard to get people to

There is a "fork" mode and a "spawn" mode. Fork (the default) tends to result in broken process pools as you say, spawn seems to work a lot better but the performance is worse.

I think that's a pretty good idea. Have you checked out the paper "Breaking Cycles in Noisy Hierarchies"? It looks pretty similar to what you're looking for and the code is open source: https://github.com/

I mean I think you’re mostly right but to be fair to Google it’s an incredibly adversarial. Thousands of people have made it their full time job to try to trick Google into thinking their blogspam is good content.

In NYC specifically, by far the loudest vehicles are dirt bikes — people ride them through streets with absolutely no regard for safety or pedestrians, running reds and honking and revving their engines. I think what you have said is genera

Why would giving the depositors their money back tempt banks to take risks? SVB has totally folded. Its stock, and probably its bonds, are equally as worthless as they were before the government stepped in. I guess it could tempt other busi

Ironically, all this does is decrease equity. Public schools may dumb down classes in this way, but private schools are unlikely to follow. For a smart kid, being from a wealthy family already confers a significant advantage, and this just

That’s true, in much the sense that doctors make money off people being sick. In times of high volatility, it’s HFTs that provide liquidity and keep spreads narrower than they’d otherwise be. It is extremely illegal to purposefully make mar
