I pre-ordered the product and I did not receive this e-mail either. I forget the exact options relating to e-mail that I selected during the Google Checkout process, but I either chose not to disclose my e-mail address to the seller or I d

Take #1 and generalize it to the mistake of trying to fix a problem without really understanding what the problem is. This has to be the most common mistake I've seen in the sysadmin world.

Yeah, I saw that too. Too bad it seems like it was ~15 hours until Amazon checked an interface and saw the high utilization.

Yikes, always remember to check interface utilization when troubleshooting performance issues with anything network related!

That's an over generalization. And difficult and expensive relative to what? When evaluating the cost of solutions to problems like this, the basic idea is to compare the cost of the solution and the cost of the problem (if realized) with

Everything fails. Design systems that minimize the impact failures have on your customers. Moving to another provider isn't going to fix the problem. Data like this should be stored in more than one place.

The price comparison with other solutions isn't really fair. The cost per PB of these storage building blocks is directly compared to complete storage solutions from companies like NetApp and EMC. In the end the cost of the complete solut

Another interesting thing from this is that it sounds like they will be awarding grand prizes for the best entry at set deadlines. In the first contest you had to improve on Cinematch by 10% to qualify to win the grand prize.

Actually the post says it will run for a period of time shorter than half of the length of the first contest which could have run for 5 years (10/2006 - 10/2011). From the post... And, like so many great movies, there will be a sequel. The

Some of the new models that came out of the Netflix Prize do take into account temporal changes. From a user perspective, it seems to be how a user's rating style can change over time and how a user's taste in movies can change with time.

I think you're looking at this problem in the wrong way. Apply some of that intelligence of yours and try to figure out why you have to "dumb yourself down" to have a good relationship with your friends. Conversation is a real skill. Comm

I've seen them two deep side by side. They had custom racks that reminded me of those racks of trays of food you'd see in large production kitchens. There were four systems per level/tray.

I don't think the calculation says anything about the grouping of data. Or does it? If you have an unbiased sample of 584 votes and 60% of the sample responded "25 - 30", could you say with 95% confidence that 60% (+/-4%) of the sampled po
